Hi Folks,

Well, things have gone well since I've been here last. Got married, became a permanent resident, got my SS number, and now tax season is coming up. And I need some advice.

I understand I have to file for taxes in both the US and Canada. I was awarded "non-resident for tax purposes" status by Revenue Canada in July 2009, but I did work a little that year and thus must file a tax return.

As such, what kind of qualifications should I be looking for in a CPA for folks with our status and specifics in the US? Also, if there are fellow VJ folks in the San Francisco region, can you recommend an accountant with expertise in this field?

Thanks,

Jay

congratulations on your marriage!

I have no idea about a good CPA in San Francisco, just thought I would bump this up in case someone knows, but it's a pretty obscure question. I know krikit has a great firm that does cross border taxes and she has mentioned the name before - might try pming her.

Whooo!

Bay area Canadian transplant! I shall soon be joining you there (don't seem to be too many of us there, which I find weird, always thought SF area had lots of Canadian ex-pats).

As for referral - my FIL has an international tax guy he's been using for 10 years or so (they moved from Canada to US, then lived in Australia for a year). Will get back to you with the name.

We will definitely be using him next year, when we each have Canadian and US taxes to do. (Yargh)

Are we allowed to post specific contact info? Or does that ban just apply to lawyers?

Jay - I'll PM you.

You are allowed to refer individuals for services that have no personal financial benefits coming back to you. The services themselves are not allowed to advertise but third party referrals are allowed.
