Hi everyone, I just received a mail today saying that I missed my interview and I will have 30 days to explain my situation.

I live in a walk up apartment in NYC and I have had mailing problems before. It took me like 2 months to apply for a New York State ID because either the mailman was retarded or the office below me returned it. And this is an honest mistake because I NEVER got the notification for interview.

Should I be worried? Is my interview gonna be delayed like another month? I"m really worried about the timing because I am trying to intern in Taiwan this summer around June. At the same time I am trying to study abroad in Shanghai next fall, so that means I'd have to get my citizenship, request my passport, get my Chinese visa before June.

Do you guys think that's possible?

Thanks so much!!

Well, it looks like your only option is to send them a letter explaining why you missed your interview. You can explain your apartment situation and how you had so much trouble lately with the mail due to factors outside your control. You need to keep it simple, mature, respectful and last but not least responsible. You need to show them that as you explain in this message that it was an honest mistake and that you have always been punctual, etc...

I can't say I have experienced this kind of situation personally, but that's what I would do if I were in your shoes.

Do you think I can call? Or do I have to write a letter?

If the letter does not specify how to explain within 30 days, I suggest you give them a call since it is the fastest method, I wonder if you can go to the location if it is not too far from where you are and maybe you can go there and see if you can talk to someone. Either way, they might explain to you what you should do in order to reschedule your interview.

Start with a call...

Is there a local post office or office where you could get a PO box until this is over with. You wouldn't have to keep it forever but it would solve the issue of missing mail.

That's a good idea, but I am not sure if USCIS will accept mailing documents to POBoxes...

That's fine as they have your PHYSICAL address and the PO box would be your mailing address.

I would call them first about it to find out if they will accept over the phone, or whether you need to write. I would write the letter/email stating that you have had issues with mail and have since signed up for a PO Box so that you no longer have this problem. Insert the PO Box address and respectfully request that they mail a new interview date to that PO box.

Good luck! Let us know how it goes!

So I called the customer service number and the first thing she asked me before I said anything was "are you calling in regards to the mail malfunction we experienced" and I was like wow I guess this happened to a lot of people. She didn't really give me much help, just told me I still have to send a letter to the office explaining the reason. I did and mailed it along with a copy of my Notice for missed interview. I hope they reschedule my interview with priority ....
