Should I send my I-751 before or after I travel?

I'm not quite sure what to do.

My husband and I are planning on visiting England for 3 weeks from Dec 19th 2010 - Jan 7th 2011. The problem is my 2year Green Card expires Feb 23rd 2011 and I was told I had to send my I-751 after Nov 28th 2010 (90 days before the card expires)

I was wondering if I should send my I-751 just before I leave for England, because I want to avoid getting my biometrics appointment scheduled for while I'm in England. Or should I send my I-751 when I get back, or would that be too late???

How long was it til you guys got your NOA and biometrics appointment?

Just apply after you get back, that is my advise. I send mine 20 days before my card got expired and i am still fine with the process. Have a nice vocation; if you apply before you leave you won't fully enjoy it by worrying, since you never know when you can get ya appointment. I thought i will get mine within few weeks, so planned on traveling, but had to cancel my plans since it been over a month and no appointment notice. Here is my advice to wait till you get back.

Good luck.

I was in the same exact situation. My wife and I planned a trip pretty much in a similar fashion and we decided to mail the application right after we came back. We made the decision so that we are here during the entire process of the I-751. Usually, you get your NOA in a couple of weeks and after that you get your biometrics letter after that so even if you mail everything right before you leave for your trip you should be fine.

Now, as long as the USCIS receives your application before Feb 23rd of 2011, you should be OK. Of course, no one recommends you send it so close to your expiration date just to be safe.

In my opinion, if you prepare the package and have everything signed and ready, and once you return from your trip you send it out, that should work out just fine. You can also mail it right before you leave and when you return you will most probably have your NOA and probably your biometrics letters waiting for you. Just make sure you have someone to check your mail and communicate with you and letters you receive while you are out of the country.

Either option should work for you so you choose whichever you feel more comfortable with

Good luck!

Thank you both for the advice! I think I will mail my application as soon as I get back in January. That way I can enjoy my vacation without worrying about important documents arriving in the mail while I'm away! If I mail it when I get back I will still have over 6 weeks before my Green Card expires. I guess that is enough time for me to receive my NOA

Thanks again :)

. . and you can also include the travel documents (boarding passes, etc.) as part of your evidence supporting your married life together if you file when you return from holidays :) . You have time after you return to get everything filed in a timely way. I say do it after as well.

“...Isn't it splendid to think of all the things there are to find out about? It just makes me feel glad to be alive--it's such an interesting world. It wouldn't be half so interesting if we knew all about everything, would it? There'd be no scope for imagination then, would there?”

That's a good idea! I'll do that :)
