What tax forms do we need to show at the interview with the I-864?

Hi everyone. Just finishing up my I-864 form (I'm sponsoring my husband), and am wondering what portions of my tax return need to be presented at the interview. Do I just need to bring the Form 1040 (plus W-2s and 1099s), which shows the total income number they need, or do I need to bring the whole long packet including all the related forms and worksheets and details (my taxes are a bit complicated due to a family business)? It's no problem to provide everything, but I just don't want to waste paper and bog them down with 70 pages in duplicate, if they only need the basic 2 pager.

Thanks in advance for the advice!

Their preference seems to be official IRS tax transcripts for the years in question, which are relatively brief and can be ordered free from the IRS.

They are more valid than returns as thjey show you filed. Also each year is only a couple pages.

i also read somewhere that photocopies of your 1040s were good enough....

My sponsor and joint sponsor submitted three years of 1040 photocopies with all W2s and all 1099s as well. The oldest of the 3 years was missing the 1099s, I think, but it got approved anyways. So for a normal situation that will definitely work. I don't know if being self-employed significantly complicates things on this front, but it might.

Tax transcripts are more valid amd preferred by USCIS. No need to submit W2s or 1099s if you submit transcripts. USCIS is still accepting copies of returns but that may change in the near future.

Copies of returns don't prove you actually filed anything or that's what you made for sure. Tax transcripts do as they showed what you filed.

LOT less paperwork to send in also. Also a LOT less for them to peruse.

London is perfectly happy with photocopies of the 1040 with accompanying W2s and 1099s. If you want to get a transcript, they're cool with that too.

Dakine, the OP is not dealing with USCIS at this point -- they're dealing with the DOS in London so there is nothing for the USCIS to prefer. They're not sending in anything, they're presenting the I-864 on the day of the interview. London does not have a problem with photocopies of the 1040 and have never stated a preference for a transcript.

Bottomline is it doesn't matter who you are dealing with. Tax transcripts are more valid than returns. Also a lot less paperwork to carry or submit.

To the OP's question: All schedules relating to the tax return need to be included.

Hence Dakine's advice re: transcripts. Less chance of a missing part of the tax return package.

Whatever. All I'm doing is passing on my experience as a former London DCFer, plus the experience of other London DCFers, to a London DCFer. What the hell do I know anyway about doing DCF through London?

At the risk of sounding like a broken record, London DOES NOT CARE. If you want to order a transcript, cool! Go for it! If you want to present tax returns, also cool! Go for it! Do what suits your circumstances and your convenience because -- as I said before -- London does. not. care.

I think I need a beer.

Thank you for all the advice and feedback, everyone. I just wanted to avoid wasting an extra 140 pages on printing every last single document and worksheet in duplicate, and it sounds like I can, so that's great.

Case by case basis. Especially if you are self employed. I don't imagine many DCFs are self employed tho.

Co sponsors may be tho.
