Why Canada Sucks....

Heh, good point, Mrs Cat!

I've just been on another forum responding to a thread asking (seriously, as far as I can tell) whether breast-feeding is gross or beautiful and madonna-like. Not good for the baby and completely natural, but beautiful and madonna-like. I wish I were making that up. By comparison this thread seems perfectly reasonable. Suckiosity exists in Canada as it does the world over, it just doesn't make Canada suck.

Beautiful eh? Tell that to the boobs that are as hard as rocks, burning and sore, and waking up at night completely soaked...

Yep beautiful and madonna like.

There are things I like about both countries. Do I see myself going back? Not really. But who can predict the future, did I ever see myself coming here? No.

Yeah, I totally feel the same way. Six years ago I would have laughed it someone said I was going to be living in Colorado.... but now that I'm here, I'm not sure I could see myself going back home.

The cost of living here is fantastic compared to what I was used to back in Canada. Generally things are cheaper, people are willing to give you better deals, there is more product selection and taxes are lower. I'd have to say I love that last part the best. But, I still miss Canada. Aside from my family and friends, the convince of seeing a doctor, and the small town way of life. There's about a million other little things I probably complain about far to often. Canada is familiar and more simplistic in my mind.

First off I'm Canadian. I live in the US and couldn't be happier. The only thing I miss really are the friends and family that are living up there. The Canadian Government has removed it's grip from my balls and it feels great. Here's a little list or the things I love about the American way of life, compared to that of the Republic of Soviet Canuckistan.

1. Did you enjoy paying $40 for a case of Bud Light? No, I'd much rather go to walmart and pay $11.99.

2. Did you like paying $35 for a round-trip from Toronto to Niagara and the 407? No, considering I can do the same trip here in Illinois for about $5.

3. Is it fair that Rogers can charge a $400 Early Termination Fee to cancel a cell phone plan? No, when the most they can charge here is $175.

I could go on for days but I think you get me point. Canadians (myself included) take it up the #### on a daily basis. And what do we do, sit back and take it, because the government has our best interests in mind, right?

Any other Canadians with me here?

You sound just like my husband. We can't buy beer in stores like Walmart or the local supermarket in PA, but after 9 or 10 pm when the beer stores close and you find yourself in need of beer, you go to the local bar and you can buy 6 packs until 2 am. Liquor, your out of luck after 9 pm.

My sister needs to drive to another county to buy any kind of alcohol. Her county is dry. What's funny is my sister teaches theatre at a college and it is a college town. I'm used to college towns being where all the bars are (that's actually the disadvantage of where we live because the kids toss their empties in our ivy most when they walk home past our house most summer weekends).

"I want to see mountains again. Mountains, Gandalf!"

Salt Lake City is the largest city in North America with real proximity to real mountains. (Don't talk to me about Denver. I flew through there. The city is on a plain. The mountains must be an hour away!)

Winnipeg is flat like a freakin' table top.

Winnipeg -> SLC = TOTAL upgrade! :)

DON'T PANIC

They are both great countries.

Personally after growing up in Canada the older I got the more the US appealed to me.

#1 the weather. I moved to California where the snow is in the mountains not the driveway.

#2 the freedom. It's the fruit of the concepts the US was founded on.

#3 the economy. Lots of opportunity, tax breaks, lower prices, the bonanza of capitalism, including ups and downs vs the ho hum limitations of socialism.

It's been a good ride in the USA!

Actually, no. The airport is on a plain, and about 45 minutes from the city. The airport was moved outside of the actual city of Denver because people complained about the noise level- very inconvenient for those of us who use it all the time. Depending on where you are in Denver, the mountains can be a 5-10 minute drive. I lived in the southeastern burbs and I could get to the mountains in minutes.

A lof of these arguments really depend on where you live. My wife is from London, ON, and I used to complain how expensive stuff was, especially alcohol. But then I saw how affordable homes were there. The cost of a home in London, ON, is about what the down payment would be on a house where we live in Palos Verdes. I think the thing that I would miss the most if we move to Canada is diversity. But I imagine someone moving from Toronto to Nebraska would say the same thing.

USC hubby and I don't drink anyways. No advantage for us here.

2. Did you like paying $35 for a round-trip from Toronto to Niagara and the 407? No, considering I can do the same trip here in Illinois for about $5.

Don't live in the east so the price differential don't benefit us.

3. Is it fair that Rogers can charge a $400 Early Termination Fee to cancel a cell phone plan? No, when the most they can charge here is $175.

I can see the advantage of the US over Canada here, but not enough to label Canada as the Soviet Canuckistan.

I'm not sure how the prices of consumer goods, determined by PRIVATE companies, has anything to do with the Canadian government having our best interest in mind? Please do explain.

I too can play this game!

1. Americans, do you like home-grown terrorists/dis-gruntled citizens flying planes into your IRS buildings and shooting fellow Americans at the Pentagon?

2. Do you like that many Americans are one medical crisis away from bankruptcy?

3. How about US hockey team winning SILVER? No wait...as a poke to that Russian athlete who called his silver medal "platinum" medal, you guys won the PLATINUM medal.

There are pros and cons to every country, and everyone has their own preferences and opinion--very hard to argue on that. ;)

Cell phone companies are regulated by the government. The insane taxes put on alcohol are set by, you got it, the government. The price of beer is the price of beer...its the taxes that double the cost. Private companies are free to charge what ever they want, and if the Canadian people think paying twice as much for the same thing is fair then I guess we the people are the MORONS.

I just want to add that if you actually tried to close your account in the US because youre moving to another country where there is no coverage for that company, they dont even penalize you. (ie. I got out of Tmobile bec they dont have coverage in Toronto)

Rogers doesnt even care if they dont have coverage in the US. They still make you fork over the termination fee :P
