Why Canada Sucks....

First off I'm Canadian. I live in the US and couldn't be happier. The only thing I miss really are the friends and family that are living up there. The Canadian Government has removed it's grip from my balls and it feels great. Here's a little list or the things I love about the American way of life, compared to that of the Republic of Soviet Canuckistan.

1. Did you enjoy paying $40 for a case of Bud Light? No, I'd much rather go to walmart and pay $11.99.

2. Did you like paying $35 for a round-trip from Toronto to Niagara and the 407? No, considering I can do the same trip here in Illinois for about $5.

3. Is it fair that Rogers can charge a $400 Early Termination Fee to cancel a cell phone plan? No, when the most they can charge here is $175.

I could go on for days but I think you get me point. Canadians (myself included) take it up the #### on a daily basis. And what do we do, sit back and take it, because the government has our best interests in mind, right?

Any other Canadians with me here?

Is that any worse than paying taxes for roads to be repaired that you don't use or for schools to be built that your kids won't attend? :)

The only thing that annoyed me while my wife was in Canada was having to go to a LCBO or Beer Store and get there a lot earlier than 2am if I wanted anything?

Yep I have taken the train up to NYC just to get a cup of timmies at penn station and I don't even leave the station, I just take the train back

Personally, I think there are pros and cons to each country.

Sure, I pay less for certain consumer goods, but I also pay more for healthcare. Maybe healthcare doesn't matter to me now, but what about when I retire?

I think my quality of life was a bit better in Canada... can't pinpoint exactly why, and I do live in NYC, so that makes a difference... but generally speaking, things are older, less updated and I don't feel like I get anything for the taxes I pay here in the US, wheras in Canada, I at least felt like I was benefitting and helping others too.

That being said, I've been thinking a lot about the future and where I will live in 10-20 years and at first I thought I would stay here forever... then I moved here and realized that I liked Canada more than I thought... and now that I've established a life here, I doubt I'll go back to Canada. Basically if I got a a really amazing job offer or something, I would go back.... but it would have to be REALLY good.

OK American here, couldn't help but read the thread as the title really sticks out LOL

Sapphire, I lived in NYC...for 2 months after college and I moved back. It's OK....but wouldn't want to live there. I lived in queens and my company paid my car rental to travel up to work to go to CT everyday...1.5 hours roughly to work everyday, the traffic was brutal, i'd circle my block for 30 minutes by the time I got back from work, I wouldn't get in till like 730. Thats awful, when you work 8-5. I want to be home no later than like 5:15/5:30.

I agree, things are not as clean in NY State for that matter. But especially in NYC. NYC is ooooold. But I guess that's part of it's city charm I'd say.

In the all I bet it all equals out. when you retire, you have social security...well, we'll see about that one actually.

Lower cost of living in the US for consumer goods and taxes, but higher health care.

Canada - higher cost of living and higher taxes, but health care is free. I'd be curious if someone could do an analysis of an average persons lifetime as far as costs and expenses goes for US vs. Canada.

Oh yes off topic, when my wife saw that in the US you can buy beer at any grocery store, she was blown away lol.

There are things I like about both countries. Do I see myself going back? Not really. But who can predict the future, did I ever see myself coming here? No.

I guess it depends on the state you're in. I'm in the state that charges you to leave so I can't really say too much about that.

On that note, when we drove back from Montreal from my wifes interview, around Toronto, I DO NOT KNOW HOW ANYONE COULD EVEN DESIRE TO LIVE THERE WITH THAT TRAFFIC!!! HOLY #######. We were driving through there at 4pm...not 5...but 4!

Unless you commute and live right in the city, I don't know how anyone does it!

A lot of the things you are comparing vary from region to region. Seattle and Vancouver are pretty similar. However, Whitehorse and Toronto are quite different, as are New Orleans and St Paul. Consumer goods are more expensive in Canada largely because there is a larger area to transport them with 1/10 the population to sell them to (so more shipping costs) and because many businesses don't seem to be willing to change their prices to reflect that fact that the Canadian dollar is no longer worth only 62 cents US. We weighed the pros and cons of which one of us would make the move. Aside from health insurance and the plausibility of having my parents immigrate to Canada too if and when the time comes that they really need to live near us, it really had more to do with him having more equity in his house and a comparison of the cities we lived in. In general, there are advantages and disadvantages to either country, and I don't think either sucks.
