Germany tells Greece to start selling its islands

Greece should sell some of its uninhabited islands to raise cash to avoid bankruptcy, two German parliamentarians from Chancellor Angela Merkel's centre-right coalition suggested on Thursday.

"The Greek state must sell stakes in companies and also assets such as, for example, unpopulated islands," Frank Schäffler, a member of parliament for the pro-business Free Democrats, told the Bild daily.

Marco Wanderwitz, an MP for Merkel's own conservative Christian Democrats, said Athens should provide collateral for any money it receives from the European Union to help it out of its debt crisis.

"In this case, certain Greek islands also come into question," added Wanderwitz.

Greeks [are] infuriated by what they see as a threatening line from a nation which ravaged their country during the Second World War.

Many have called for a boycott of German products - resulting in a fall in sales at German car dealerships, a supermarket chain and even a pet food distributor.

Greece's deputy foreign minister, Dimitris Droutsas, told German TV: 'I've also heard the suggestion we should sell the Acropolis. Suggestions like this are not appropriate at this time.'

Germany: We don't want to give Greece one cent

(but they apparently want their islands)

BERLIN -(Dow Jones)- Greece is responsible for its own healthy finances and shouldn't need aid from Germany or other euro-zone countries, German economics minister Rainer Bruederle said Friday.

"Greek Prime Minister [George] Papandreou has not said that he wants one cent, and we don't want to give him one cent, either," Bruederle said.

One of the things that prevents me from considering a future return to Germany are the temperatures. The acquisition of a few spots in the Mediterranean would sufficiently address that concern of mine.

Good point. We have Hawai'i and Puerto Rico (yes, bitсhes - we have you) and the USVI and American Samoa. What do the Germans have? Bupkis.

 I like that.

:lol: This is AJ back at VJ.

I can hardly believe that Germany has made such an offer or suggestion. It's either they are sarcastic or foolhardy. If Germany tries the same scheme by talking to the Philippine President, she might consider that favorable.

I agree with that notion. If you can't pay because you spent money like you can print it yourself, even after we gave you plenty of time to get your affairs in order, we take what you own. They do that with you, with me, with everybody, why not Governments?

They take a family's home away, tens of thousands of families' homes in the US alone this year; isn't that more cruel than asking an overextended Government to sell some uninhabited rocks in the middle of the Mediterranian Sea and use the money to get back on their feet. I bet the population of Greece enjoys food, shelter, education, and healthcare more than those islands that have no purpose to them.

Same with Haiti. If they can't pay for what it cost to rebuild their infrastructure, and other countries' taxpayers have to fund that with their hard earned money, they should give something in return. I can visualize some beautiful and tastefully done tourism complexes, which will bring urgently needed money to the people.

Mexico. Same thing. Sell the Baja California to the highest bidder as long as it's a friendly country, who develops it and will bring tourism and money in spades.

Just my two cents.

There is no room in this country for hyphenated Americanism. When I refer to hyphenated Americans, I do not refer to naturalized Americans. Some of the very best Americans I have ever known were naturalized Americans, Americans born abroad. But a hyphenated American is not an American at all . . . . The one absolutely certain way of bringing this nation to ruin, of preventing all possibility of its continuing to be a nation at all, would be to permit it to become a tangle of squabbling nationalities, an intricate knot of German-Americans, Irish-Americans, English-Americans, French-Americans, Scandinavian-Americans or Italian-Americans, each preserving its separate nationality, each at heart feeling more sympathy with Europeans of that nationality, than with the other citizens of the American Republic . . . . There is no such thing as a hyphenated American who is a good American. The only man who is a good American is the man who is an American and nothing else.
