This is a marriage-based community. Given that gays can't marry under federal law, anti-gay threads are entirely within scope of this site.

Given that one can be bisexual and yet still seek marriage with a partner of the opposite sex, or be straight and seek marriage with someone with a gay family member, or otherwise sponsor a gay relative, anti-gay topics can and do effect members of this community.

And would you say that 60 years ago, when interracial couples were legally allowed to not marry (and thus were second-class citizens, though not as second class as minorities in general were) and other race-based shenanigans were allowed, dissing minorities or mixed couples isn't bigotry? A legal flip switch doesn't change what is and is not bigotry.

As well, basing one's bigotry off of a law that is not constitutional (as per state findings in most of the states that have legalized gay marriage, where almost unilaterally, the argument of equal protection rights and the comparison to Loving v Virginia tends to be made) is sketchy at best.

No, it's not. There are all kinds of immigration visas catered for here besides marriage based ones. Even if it were simply about marriage, there are arguably gay children from these marriages who have every right to immigrate. Bigotry is also against the TOS. Either the TOS have a meaning or they do not. If they do not, then the mods should quit chastising me and everyone else for name calling which while mindless and irritating is not as serious as racism and bigotry.

I'll tell you whats interesting to me is since I have been here at VJ, I can't count the times I have heard people who live in Mobile homes (trailers) spoken of as if they were the lowest life form... most often when one person is trying to insult another. (Trailer trash)

I'm bettin we have members right here who must feel attacked every time they see that, I checked and I could not find you opening your mouth one time in defense of them even though you know members of VJ live in Mobile homes.

I have simply used the term PINK and post 2 news stories and look at all the saliva running down your chin over it.

Danno, no, it's nothing to do with the word pink, it's about what having a 'thread for and about gays' says about the VJ community, particularly when the person starting the thread is known to be bigoted.

I have no wish to silence you, I do not wish you to be suspended and I have no wish to stop you posting whatever articles you want to post but I do wish it to be noted that this type of generic 'gay thread' has no place in a site that should be open and welcoming to all.

You do recognize, of course, that 99% of every article posted would have to go in the "white thread"? Every political thread since our political establishment is largely white (even our black President is actually half white); every general interest thread involving North America, Europe and those two inconsequential nations down under; every thread about movies, unless the movie is Precious or a Spike Lee production; almost every TV thread; global warming threads, since most scientists are white; and so on.

Of course, there's a dilemma. Some of those white people are gay. So when a global warming scientist is white and gay, do we cross post across both threads?

Or do we just accept the status quo that a scientist being white or gay means nothing in a global warming thread, that his or her presence in that article is due to his scientific expertise and not his race or sexual proclivities?
