Hello VJ friends, I am about to send in the great N-400 form for my wife, is it still true that documents in spanish do not need to be translated?

I do not know of any sort of exception for Spanish language documents.

Page 5 of N-400ins (instructions for filling out the N-400) has this to say:

"Translations - Any document containing foreign language submitted to the USCIS must me accompanied by a full English language translation which the translator has certified as complete and accurate, and by the translator's certification that he or she is competent to translate from the foreign language into English"

It seems pretty clear that you need a translation,

but I would suggest you read the form for your self and call the USCIS if anything is unclear.

Yes, you need them translated and certified as well.
