AOS Interview - Boston

Just thought I'd stick pen to paper (so to speak) and share the experiences at the AOS interview in Boston today.

The interview was at 9.30am, Jen and I arrived at the JFK Federal Building around 8.50am and whizzed through security and went through to the USCIS reception area, where we handed over the appointment notice and were then directed to the waiting room.

There were only a few people in the room when we got there (it filled rapidly) and we waited for around 30 minutes until we were called through to interview. We were greeted by the officer and directed to her office which was a long way down a huge row of them.

The officer was really friendly, she swore us in and we got down to business. The officer asked for my passport EAD and license and then to confirm my personal details (name, address, DoB and SSN etc). She then asked me if I'd ever been arrested or committed a crime (no) and then she said that I'd answered no to all the rest of the questions and if any of the answers had changed (no). Finally she asked me to confirm my signature.

Next she asked Jen how we met, when we first met in person and then how we continued our relationship. She then asked about when we first talked about marriage, then about the wedding (where, who was there, what did you do after) and asked for some pictures which we all had a laugh over when recounting their stories!

The officer then asked for papers showing joint financial responsibility and we passed her copies of bank statements, credit cards, rental agreement, cable bill and health insurance. She punched holes in them and filed them without a second glance. And that was that, out came the big approved stamp and we were done!

My EAD was retained, but I was given a copy of it and the office did say that if I had any problems to make an Info

I guessed that we were on pretty safe ground by then and asked her about the RFE that I'd received for the medical. The officer explained that the "people who process the cases at the lockbox are just dragged in off the street", they just blindly follow check lists and don't have a clue about immigration requirements. She took the time to show me that the medical from London was in the file, showed us that that she'd noted that the RFE had been incorrectly issued and where she'd tagged everything up to demonstrate that everything was correct. She then went on to complement us that ours was a nice straightforward case and that everything had been in order to start with (grrrr?).

We were in and out of the office in about 15 minutes, but had to go and sit in the waiting room for a bit to get the approval notice. All in all I have to say that the whole experience was quite pleasant!
