Again, I have gotten to the point in a thread where no common ground can be found. This seems to be happening a lot lately.

What I do wish for is a better situation in the near future for our seniors. I can only hope that in the future, despite the attitudes some have, every senior in this country is able to afford their medication and live as they deserve to live, without having to worry about whether or not they have to choose between their medication, place to live or their food. With the economic crisis, many many seniors lost most or all of their pensions. The government bailed out the banks, but hasn't bailed out our parents and grandparents. They were counting on this money to be able to live, and now many are left with little to nothing.

One day, many of us will be those seniors. And if things don't get better for us, I hope people can reflect on their previous attitudes and recognize how it feels to be in those shoes.

I hope none of us ever has to go through this.

Fine, limit Social Security to those who are disabled or handicapped, have no income and

no living relatives.

This should be enough to make the system solvent.

What if they have an annual income of $10000/year?

How so?

A lot of people lost a significant portion of their investments during the crashes...and those who are retired have no hope of building them up to their previous levels again, it just takes too long.

I couldn't really find a good article, but I know my grandma lost a HUGE chunk of her 401-K and the little she has left is running out.

So people screwed up their self-managed investments? Every financial advisor will tell you to start ramping your positions in equities down once you hit 50 and to accelerate the ramp down after 55... how many old people listened?

Fuс em. I have nothing against individual old people but as a group they are going to suck us dry if we let them.

Man is made by his belief. As he believes, so he is.

Then their benefits should be reduced by $10000/year.

Sorry, I misunderstood your previous post. I can agree with this, reducing benefits based on income above a certain level, as long as regional variances are taken into account. And, health variances too, I suppose - someone with a $50,000/year income but has Alzheimer's is a lot poorer than the same person who has no diseases.

The stock market is back where it was in 2005 - which is double what it was in 1996, and 50% higher than 2002.

I guess they didn't have a problem with the stock market when their investments doubled in value

between 1996 and 2005, but now that they've lost 25%, it's suddenly Teh Evil.
