Tough titties.

I realize that 13 billion dollars sounds like chump change these days, but it's a LOT of money.

Are we overpaying Grandpa?

Getting Old is Expensive

It is really easy for the young and healthy, totally able to work, to dismiss the importance of programs designed for those who can't. They WILL understand one day, unfortunately it will be too late then.

Getting old is expensive, especially with the crappy healthcare system we have right now.. And I dont see how they are getting a "free handout" after paying taxes all these years!

Maybe they should fix healthcare & the medicare donut hole, so seniors wouldn't be so strapped for money.

For example, my grandma can't afford her medication and she's in the "donut hole," paying $300 for a months worth of just ONE of her medications, which she absolutely needs. Medicare won't pick up the tab until she reaches a certain dollar amount.

For someone who worked her entire life and paid taxes, this is not fair.

Maybe we should start means testing benefits. Then the system could be more progressive.

Just because you paid taxes, doesn't mean you paid 'enough' taxes to sustain you for the rest of the life and doesn't mean that everyone else should have to take care of you.

Plan for your own retirement to take care of yourself.

This government dependence for people who were capable and worked all their lives is ludicrous. Social Security and Medicare shoudl strictly be what you paid in, is what you get out. End of story.

Two biggest expenditures of the US Government and we can't afford them!

Fine if they don't have the means. But for those that could survive just fine without it, then perhaps they shouldn't be taking money from the working poor.

then they still owe my grandma a sh*tload of cash and she's not that young

To be honest, even planning with your own retirement plan (like she has done) isn't enough. Especially in places with high costs of living like New York.

However, what I think what is putting our seniors in a financial hole, more than anything, is the cost of healthcare.

Indeed it is.

This is also why many seniors move to southern states too. The cost of living is so much cheaper. It's almost ridiculous sometimes.

There's a huge difference in North vs. South actually in cost.

I lived in Minnesota for 3 1/2 years.

A large/nice home where would cost you $350,000 at the cheapest..

You can buy the exact same home here in Texas for $175,000 - $250,000 depending on where you go..

Hell, small nice homes in decent neighborhoods you can get buy with finding them for less than $100k easily.

Everything is cheaper here for the most part... except liquor prices.. They're a little more pricey... Damned "sin" taxes lol!

Yeah, take away Social Security and Medicare. Then they will all die, and the whole problem will be solved. Right? We don't want people who can't carry their own weight here. Next up...anyone with physical or mental impairments. Why should we have to foot any of their bill?

Churches, Charities, etc.... There's plenty of ways out there.

No one should be forced to take care of anyone however.

I don't get how you think eliminating social programs that help the disabled or the elderly would be a good thing.

Charities and churches are wonderful and bridge gaps, but they certainly aren't enough. When economic times are rough, people don't donate to charities and churches. So then what would you have us do, let the disabled and elderly starve to death?

Listen, I'm well aware of the abuses of the welfare system in this country, and the many objections to it. We're not talking about that here. I don't even think conservatives would recommend we eliminate social programs geared to help the elderly or the disabled.
