My experience is no - not without a great deal of confusion on the American bank's part and not without a fee if they can even do it at all. I don't actually think this is different then in Canada though, you probably can't take an American cheque (check :) ) to TD and expect them to cash it easily either.

So thinking ahead to the future.....bringing $$$ down here when you move, your wedding guests should give cash or you should have EI direct deposited into a Cdn account instead of them sending you a cheque. Don't know what you were thinking of though...just examples.

PS - the first couple months I was here, I received a couple refund cheques from my old landlord. I actually signed the back and sent them back to my parents to cash or deposit in my Cdn account.

So now I'll be stuck with a cheque I cant cash. I might have to send it up to a friend to deposit in my Canadian account I guess :(

You can also just mail it directly to your Canadian bank with a note and your acct# and they'll deposit it for you into your Canadian account.

I have *never* had an issue depositing an American check at our Canadian bank.

My family hasn't ever had any problems depositing Canadian checks into their banks.

Ditto. I deposited a cheque here with no problem. Took them about a week. There may or may not have been a service fee. The exchange rate probably wasn't ideal, but whatever.

The distinction here is between depositing and cashing cheques. Most banks have the ability to do the former, for some kind of nominal fee, if you have an account. But cashing is different. Cashing is them just giving you cash for the cheque even if you don't have an account there. My bank won't cash Canadian cheques, and I think very few banks , if any here, will.

DON'T PANIC

No not cash it but you can deposit it in your US account and wait for it to clear.

By the way in the US it's spelled "check" not "cheque"... and no one will know what a "touque" is either!

It can be a frustrating experience in trying to deposit a Cdn cheque in the USA! Even when dealing with the same USA bank, and dealing with different bank tellers, it can be frustrating! I had oodles of problems with Wachovia at first! Was a nightmare! Eventually I just dealt with 1 teller--and if she wasn't there, I just walked out,lol I had tellers try and charge me a $75 fee on a cheque worth like $100,lol Another time I got it deposited just fine, then liek 2 weeks later I received the cheques back in the mail--and with the money taken OUT of my acct--reason was the cheques had to be over $75????? But if i dealt with that 1 teller, I was fine! Just beware that sure they may NOT charge u any fees, BUT their exchange rate may be lower!! And if ur new, they usually put a hold on the $$$ for 10-14 days! After a bit, they didnt bother to do that for me! But I smartened up and opened up a Customhouse.com account!! Free to set up.and the transactions are free, that is if you do it Electronically (EFT) takes 3-5 Business days on avg to conduct a transaction! Never had a problem and have transferred over large amounts of $$$ at 1 time and felt safely doing so. I would just mail my Cdn cheques back to my parents, who had my debit card, and they deposited it into my account. I can also transfer money from my USA acct to my Cdn acct, which comes in handy when I head back home to visit.

Ur other option is to open a RBC account, seems one can transfer $$ at ease between ur Cdn acct and USA RBC acct!

Canadians Visiting the USA while undergoing the visa process, my free advice:

1) Always tell the TRUTH. never lie to the POE officer

2) Be confident in ur replies

3) keep ur response short and to the point, don't tell ur life story!!

4) look the POE officer in the eye when speaking to them. They are looking for people lieing and have been trained to find them!

5) Pack light! No job resumes with you

6) Bring ties to Canada (letter from employer when ur expected back at work, lease, etc etc)

7) Always be polite, being rude isn't going to get ya anywhere, and could make things worse!!

8) Have a plan in case u do get denied (be polite) It wont harm ur visa application if ur denied, that is if ur polite and didn't lie! Refer to #1

At Chase, I've never had an issue depositing a Canadian cheque into my American account. I do at least one a month. No fee associated.

I've never attempted to cash any portion of the cheque.

I'm a member of First Bank here in CO and they will deposit Canadian cheques. I believe there is a $2 fee, or something close to $2. Of course, you are subject to the interest rate they want to give you on a particular day.

I can also vouch for Chase. Say you depost a $100 cheque. They will add $100 to your bank account. A week later you'll get a piece of paper in the mail stating they are charging the exchange rate. So they'll deduct about $4.32 or whatever the heck the exchange rate is between USA and Canada.

No big deal.
