Calgary church loses charitable status

Published: Sunday, February 28, 2010, 3:28 pm | Author: Patrick B. Craine Special to The Interim

The Canada Revenue Agency has revoked the charitable status of Kings Glory Fellowship, a Christian church in Calgary. The CRA cites a number of issues with KGF’s application, but the decision is based, in part, on the ground that certain KGF board members have spoken out strongly against abortion and other moral issues.

“The members of the Board of Directors espouse strong negative views about sensitive and controversial issues, which may also be viewed as political, such as abortion, homosexuality, divorce, etc.,” wrote CRA agent Dian Prodanov in an Oct.29 letter.

These “political” views make the church ineligible because, according to the agent, a registered charity “may only engage in non-partisan political activities as long as it devotes substantially all (usually 90% or more) of its resources to charitable activities.”

KGF’s pastor, Artur Pawlowski, is also the founder and pastor of Street Church Ministries, which has made headlines because of its battle with the city of Calgary to uphold its right to preach to and serve the city’s poor.

In December, a provincial court judge sided with Pawlowski and SCM, striking down several city infractions against them. Further, the judge found that “the City’s attempts … to limit the scope of the efforts by the accused to minister to his congregants, fall precariously close to being excessive and, to any reasonable observer, an abuse of power.”

Prodanov cited numerous problems with KGF’s application, such as a lack of detail about various expenditures, but Pawlowski called these other reasons “smoke screens.”

“The main point is that they don’t like my opinions about different controversial issues, and I speak about them openly on radio, in paper, and on TV,” he said. “So that’s what happens when you express your views as a pastor.”

“If they take the charity status away from a church, they are hoping that they are going to starve us to death in Canada, and therefore we will not be able to influence anyone,” he continued. “That’s basically what happens. That’s what they want to accomplish. They want to muzzle us up.”

That's Canada, not the U.S. The power to tax is a major way the state could curb religious institutions so it's not likely to be widespread here unless we want the government to monitor all church activities, sermons and accounting records.

I certainly hope this is a tongue in cheek. Otherwise, you are simply not paying attention. After California voted against gay marriage, gay marriage proponents attacked various churches that spoke out against gay marriage attempting to do just this, revoke their tax free status. These churches did not directly use money to fund political action. The argument was made that simply by encouraging their members to work against gay marriage, the churches had violated their tax free status.

There you have it. Proponents of gay marriage are already trying to dictate what churches can and cannot teach. Revoking tax free status of a church for the things that it teaches is functionally equivalent to fining a church for what it teaches.

How do you keep a ** in suspense?

Ask him if you can help push his stool in ?

Don't just open your mouth and prove yourself a fool....put it in writing.

It gets harder the more you know. Because the more you find out, the uglier everything seems.

I don't believe Church's should be tax exempt....

....unless they can prove that their funds aren't being used for 'profit'

There are some shady churches, someone pretty close to me worked as an investigator for the IRS.

She relayed a number of these cases to me.

In most cases, no matter the extravagant spending carried out by the minister, it was very hard to find a Church member to aid in the investigation.

In fact often when the spending and girl-friends and the double life is revealed the majority -stick by him, even claiming it's the Devil trying to oppress Minister so and so.

But really, the vast majority of Churches are run on limited funds and are controlled by a board.

Religious groups do an unbelievable amount of community good, if you doubt me I challenge anyone to go to your phone book and call most any social help agency, if they are not run outright by religious group the majority of their help comes from faith based groups.

This is not true just in the USA but use google and try to find a private organization which helps the poor in any country and see if you find very many who are not supported by some religious organization.

Problem is we have so many people hostile towards religion who are flat out ignorant of the work these organizations do.... the Catholic Church being a notable mention.
