Whether someone thinks I am a homophobe because I don't support gay marriage really doesn't matter to me if they haven't been around me in real life. They can have their opinions, I can have the reality. It's not worth getting too far bent out of shape about.

True story. And you can disagree on the issue and still like and respect each other if you haven't resorted to hiding behind words and acting like a child.

For example, even though you're wrong, I still like you, Stina! :P

"We dont give a sh_t about what parents think" is a stark reality in academics on all levels.

Well, perhaps where you work and live. But I've never had a colleague on either the secondary or university level who ever said that or taught that way. In fact, most -- if not all -- of my colleagues, highly value the parents, their input and support, and what is taught at home in the family. Our job as educators is to guide and impart unbiased knowledge. I feel sad if this is the environment you teach/have taught it. How frustrating and demeaning it must be to be surrounded by this.

My wife was not trained to be a teacher during undergrad so she had to do her alternate route coursework at a local college for entry into the profession. I often proofread her papers and a common theme, recurring over and over again, was of parents being "partners" in the process.

Man is made by his belief. As he believes, so he is.

It was. I wrote a grant to get money to provide greater support for the detention program, hoping to allow for the kids that wound up there often to be able to learn some new coping skills and gain some traction. It was shot down by their teachers who stated quite plainly that they didn't like those kids and wanted them to suffer. That was many years ago and I still think about it often. :(

Yep. That's not to say there doesn't exist a teacher who is anti-parent-involvement, but in my experience (granted only 10 years) it's VERY rare. We want parents involved and we respect the beliefs a student brings with them to the class.

Sadly, there are more than a few anti-parent teachers.

Are you teaching how to safely "rim" at your school?

Of course I'm not sure what age your students are but as you can see from the vids, ... you can't start teaching the joy and pride of gay life soon enough.

Heck, you're a bigot here if you place limits on anything.

BINGO!

Don't just open your mouth and prove yourself a fool....put it in writing.

It gets harder the more you know. Because the more you find out, the uglier everything seems.
