It's been a while since I have last been on this site and it's always been a great source of information and help. Me and my wife have been married for over five years and more than enough time has passed for her to apply for citizenship. My question is if anyone knows how long this process from start to finish is?

Typically around 5 months but some have completed in as little as 2 1/2 months. The timeline threads in this forum are helpful in giving one an idea of how long the process will take in your area.

I believe it is 5 years as an LPR although if you are married to a US Citizen then it is 3 years.

My daughter completed the process in 7 months.

Best wishes

Richard

Hi Rich&Martina,

Well, as for citizenship timelines...there are many variables....it can be slow, it can be fast.....

The average now to complete the US Citizenship process is about 2-6 months.....which is a big range.....

And it can change from year to year too, as a few years ago, things were a lot slower in the process...

It all boils down to: a) Interview dates...Can your local office schedule one quick enough and are you able to pass such that day.

b ) More importantly: Oath dates. You are not a US Citizen until you take the oath. Some people get their oaths as quick as the same day, while some people get their oaths days, months, weeks, months, later.....It all depends on the schedule of your local office....

For example, my citizenship process was 2 1/2 months exactly, from start to finish....which was quicker than usual due to other circumstances....Can't say that it can be as quick for others...again...depends on your local office there....

Have a look at the VJ N-400 Timeline message threads to get a better idea about how naturalization timelines are in your local office/area....

Based on marriage, you can apply for US Citizenship in 3 years minus 90 days from the "residence since" date on your green card, and at the same time be married for at least 3 years, living with the same USC spouse for 3 years, and the USC spouse has to have been a US citizen for 3 years....

You can apply anytime after that too.......There is no "time limit" as to when one has to apply, or even apply at all.....

Hope this helps. Good luck with your immigration journey too.

Ant

Thanks for all of the feedback and help. I have one more application question. Since my wife does not have a middle name, do I leave that section blank on the application or enter N/A?

Rich&Martina-You're welcome. Glad to able to help. I have no idea about not having a middle name (lol...as I have one)....But let me ask you this: What did you do for previous applications with the USCIS? Did you leave it blank or write N/A there? And were they ok with that? What did your green card say? If I were you, I would write, "None" instead of "N/A", as a quick glance at "N/A" could be mistaken as "NIA" if written and/or read incorrectly...lol....(with the USCIS..who knows....). The important thing here, is that you make sure that all the name fields are correct here, as that will be on the naturalization for the rest of your life, and it will cost more time and money to get it corrected and replaced later on. Hope this helps too. Good luck.

The section in the application says if applicable under middle name therfore i thought to write N/A or just to leave it blank. It's been a while since we last filled out any applications so I forgot what i put in that section. I will try to ask the person who helped me last time. Otherwise, I will just leave it blank since that shouln't confuse anyone. Thanks again!

RichandMartina-Good idea...maybe you should contact the USCIS about this too. Not sure though, about leaving it "blank", as they might think that you forgot to fill something out, and could reject it that way. Better to write something than nothing at all there...just a thought....
