Hey JR, Congratulations!! It's always good to have a little less stress in your life. Driving on your beltway (DC) is enough for me. Wishing you the best of luck and much happiness.

We got the GC in the mail yesterday. It was dated May 13th. That means we can apply on Feb 13 of 2012 for removal of conditions.

Today Dave went down to the social security office and they took his social security card that said "eligible for employment with DHS authorization" and promised to mail him a new card without conditions soon. The woman that called his number had not seen the new greencard and she took it around to all of the employees working there and showed them the new design.

At the Social Security offer there was another man there that had just received his citizenship. When he apologized for not having his greencard on him they laughed and told him that he never had to carry the GC ever again.

Because of the federal wording of the laws, I believe he will always have to carry his greencard on him. I'm wondering if we can just make a photocopy of the front and back for him to put in his wallet so that we can store it in a safe place with our passports. Anyone have any thoughts on that?

Hey friends,

I have a quick question. I am preparing the docs for the interview and I am wondering about the i-864 affidavit of support. As usual, it says to submit one unless already submitted, blah blah blah. I was going to bring the copy of what i submitted with the packet, but here comes my question: mu husband got a raise ( ) and he got his 2009 tax return in the meantime. Do I need to complete a new affidavit with this info? We are already planning on bringing a copy of the 2009 tax return, and we have an updated letter from his employer stating his new position (basically tehy just added a "senior" ) and new salary. Also, we have the paystubs for the past 3 months. I think it's enough...what do you say?

First of all, congratulations!

I think if he has a valid US ID, such as a driver's licence, he should be fine. I never carry my passport or NOA for AOS around. Maybe it's my mistake? Well, so far I have never been pulled over, but I was asked for ID by the cops twice, once out of a club (lots of drunk people) and once just randomly at night as we were walking home from a friend's house nearby (Oh, America...). I never had any problems.

Given the fact that they stole my passport with my J1 visa in 2008 I think I will keep a copy of the GC with me and will carry it only when I travel!

Any other thoughts?

Legally you are suppose to always have the GC on you. That is part of the uproar about the 'new' Arizona law. It actually just states that federal law must be followed and a non-US citizen must be able to present their authorization to be in the US upon request. I rather keep the GC safe and if for some reason my husband is arrested for not having a GC, be able to take it to the jail and get him out.

I guess I don't understand it very well and I'm probably making assumptions.. I really am unsure, but want to do everything the right way.

In the state of Utah a new law was put into effect on January 1, 2010 you cannot get a driver's license unless you are a legal permanent resident or a citizen. This means no renewals by mail for ANYONE in the next 5 years. Our Canadian friend got a driving privledge card with his K-1 I-94, but it expires when the I-94 does and he will have to get the GC and go back for a REAL driver's license soon.

I think it does depend from state to state as far as the law for a driving permit. I hope Califrnia will know better than AZ, but who knows...

My question is though, how are they supposed to know you are not a citizen? I mean, in Arizona in my opinion the law is really about racial profiling. They see a "Mexican looking" guy and assume he is not a citizen, probably illegal. I won't rant about this law because it is not the place here LOL. Now, if I am pulled over, and asked for my license, registration, etc., how will they know I am not an American citizen? I mean, I have a slight accent but most people say it's almost undetectable. How can they know if my husband for example is a citizen? I mean, does he need to carry his birth certificate with him? His last name could very well be German.

I understand and agree with the Law that states you should have the GC with you at all times. But a valid, REAL driver license, a copy of your GC and of your unexpired foreign passport shoould be sufficient for the police to use some common sense. Would they really just arrest you if you have all the docs I mentioned and not the original GC?

my entire family practically (immediate) went through status changes, visa, greencard to citizenship.

I had a greencard for 5 years and never carried a copy or the card with me.

I don't think it is in there interest to ask you for that...nor a priority (i'm speaking about my experience in california) and even in conservative "white" Orange county.

god knows i have had my share of speeding tickets and they never asked for any identification other than id.

i think it is currently a non-issue.

in arizona, if they are suspicious about your status they may be able to ask ...but really, my husband i told him to carry the cell and my number ...if you get pulled over - tell him your situation because i wont let him take his passport and social security card around bc if he loses them or they are stolen it would be a nightmare to have to deal with.

but then again, what do i know! lol

 Congrats!!
