Can anyone tell me what the security check is for? And how do you request it with the RCMP?Do they know what it is?

RCMP security check is just a 'police check' but specifically a CPIC search. All you have to do is go to your local police station that performs police checks and tell them that you want it for Immigration purposes. RCMP have a security system called CPIC and it's a criminal database that encompasses all of Canada and not just the province. It takes about 4 weeks to get, so if you need it soon, I would suggest going soon.

Most often asked question on here, right up with "can i visit the usa" lol

Like the above poster stated, has to be done canada wide (CPIK) and down with all the names you have used (if u have changed ur name) Can be done by the RCMP or ur local police force. Not all do them, so best to call ahead! Some place do them right there for ya, some take a day, some a week or longer. Some do it for free, some charge $$$. HAd mine done by the RCMP in Kingston NS and looked like a 3 yr old drew it up!

Canadians Visiting the USA while undergoing the visa process, my free advice:

1) Always tell the TRUTH. never lie to the POE officer

2) Be confident in ur replies

3) keep ur response short and to the point, don't tell ur life story!!

4) look the POE officer in the eye when speaking to them. They are looking for people lieing and have been trained to find them!

5) Pack light! No job resumes with you

6) Bring ties to Canada (letter from employer when ur expected back at work, lease, etc etc)

7) Always be polite, being rude isn't going to get ya anywhere, and could make things worse!!

8) Have a plan in case u do get denied (be polite) It wont harm ur visa application if ur denied, that is if ur polite and didn't lie! Refer to #1

I had mine done in Steinbach, MB, and was able to walk right out with it. Took 20 minutes, tops. Only complication was that they wouldn't take cash, CC or interac, and I didn't have a chequebook handy so I had to go buy a money order at the post office.

I just showed them my Packet 3 checklist and they knew exactly what it was talking about and what I needed.

DON'T PANIC

this has nothing to do with the topic but I saw Steinbach and I had to respond... I was born there and lived in the Steinbach area for about 15 years.. I still have a boatload of relatives that live there, aunts, uncles, cousins etc......

still off topic - I visited a friend who was working in the Museum in Steinbach back in 1979. I took a photo of the museum's 'main street' and entered it into a National Film Board of Canada photography competition and won (3 of my photos did, actually). The photo was included in a travelling exhibit called 'Sites of History' that toured Canada for 5 years. Yay Steinbach!

“...Isn't it splendid to think of all the things there are to find out about? It just makes me feel glad to be alive--it's such an interesting world. It wouldn't be half so interesting if we knew all about everything, would it? There'd be no scope for imagination then, would there?”
