In these Olympics, Canadians only paid attention to Canada.

People take things as they wish and even my fiance agreed with my point on the hocket thing (again same thing as this with the arrogance).

That's the point of the article though, is it's not that normal..

Usually you see all nations fairly represented and the olympic rings everywhere to be seen. In Vancouver though, it was a sea of red and white w/Maple leafs everywhere. Hell, it had been that since almost a year prior. Even when I was in Toronto 3 times this past year (starting with May) it was all over the place.

The Olympics are supposed to be about togetherness, not nationalism.

The article is quite funny, but I also find your statement above to be. Arrogance? I just don't see that in relation to the hockey, or really the games in general. You have a very one sided perspective, as does the article writer.

So the Canadians hosted the Olympics, they wore red and white and waved flags - so what? I don't see how anyone would care about this, I really don't.

It therefore does not surprise me in the least that a significant cross section of Canadian society, in the morning hangover after this orgy of healthy patriotism, looked back on their own behavior, and saw something in themselves and their fellow countrymen that they hate when they see it in others. I have no doubt that they feel quite conflicted over the whole thing. The phrase "self loathing" may not be misapplied :)

Touch of the dramatic :hehe:

I love my country and I don't care who knows it. I don't own a pair of red mittens, or a flag for that matter, I didn't see anything to 'hate' in my fellow countrymen.

Oh good - so can I complain that NBC's coverage was pathetic and heavily American slanted? I was kind of ticked that I was stuck watching VIRTUALLY only the American athletes or competitions that NBC pre-decided would be popular and contained American athletes.

I missed being in Canada where I have a choice of the Canadian coverage and the American networks.....and yes - Candaa heavily favours it's athletes as well.

So what's the problem?

I love my country and I don't care who knows it. I don't own a pair of red mittens, or a flag for that matter, I didn't see anything to 'hate' in my fellow countrymen.

Dammit - I really wanted a pair of those too

Actually it's funny that you mention the NBC coverage. I had the hockey game on and they kept showing the American goalie. So much so that I started to wonder what the heck was up. I thought, why do they keep showing this guy over and over, is there something unusual or spectacular about him? I think they might have shown the Canadian goalie once.

Then I realized I was on NBC instead of CTV :hehe:

Well, when the puck spent most of the time in the US end of the rink, that happens.

And yes, he is spectacular. I predict riots should Buffalo ever think of trading him. :P

Star Telegram ?

That's Ft. Worth, right?

I think if the author was a 'transplanted Texan' - then - he had some other nit to pick.

Maybe it was 'slam on Canada' day back in Ft. Worth?

Oh well - he's a #######@ss, and decided to apologize -

I just think it's so funny how Paul can go on and on about Texas, and how much better it is there. But we dare show our pride in hockey, or our country and we're called arrogant.

I meant during lulls in play - I actually do understand, despite my lack of knowledge about hockey, that a camera person will pan to the goal where the puck is (the little round thing they are pushing about)

And I don't care if he gets traded :hehe:

Hi Everyone,

I do not see what is wrong with the host nation being proud of the fact that they hosted an important event such as the olympics...

And if this time around was the Canadians....Then why not show some Canadian pride and culture? :star:

And the same goes to any other nation that hosts the olympics.... :star:

Lol..Actually, this year I've paid more attention to the games, because it was in Canada...

And it made me realize, "I'm proud to be Canadian!"...

I just wish though, that Canadians would show more of this pride during other times of the year....Really, Canadians need to be less humble about this...

Lol...As for the American coverage on NBC...Blah! Really, the Americans need to improve on this.....

Too many commerical breaks, too little coverage, bad scheduling, inconsistencies, etc......

Lol..I'll trade in the NBC coverage for the CTV/CBC coverage anyday!

Hmm..I wonder what the writer of the article would have thought if they saw the NBC coverage instead of the CTV coverage.....

I am wondering why the writer DIDN'T see NBC coverage as he was probably in Canada, and most major cities do carry both Canadian and American networks. As for being proud, who cares.

It's like having the debbie downer friend... you know the one. The one you can't be happy around, or let them know any good news about your life because they'll bite your head off and attempt to make you feel like ####### for being happy.

No time for those types of people.. no time.

I remember watching other Olympics when I was still in Canada.. and not just ones hosted by Canada and Canadian television was always really good about not just focusing on Canadian athletes and they would even show events that didn't have Canadians in them...

NBC sucked.

Only really focused on the Americans unless someone else won gold or whatever.

I'm happy Canada was like that, it was our turn to show the world who we really are and that we love our country.

Yay Canada!

Ant

I don't wish this, patriotism has a place, but the hyped up type of patriotism "We are the BEST COUNTRY IN THE WORLD" kind of stuff, on a regular basis - let other countries keep that.

I personally do not believe that we are not a nation of flag wavers because we lack a sense of identity or that we are humble or lack pride and love of our country, I think it's the opposite - we know who we are.
