Hi everybody

I am new on this website! My boyfriend and I are planning to get married next year and we still don’t know which visa to apply, but I think we will probably choose the K1. I have a problem about moving to the US…I am still at college and I am looking for information to conclude my graduation there. I have contacted some universities around the city where my boyfriend is currently living, and I even sent them a syllabus of each class I have ever taken at my university here in Brazil, so they can eliminate the classes which the content are the same as there. Anyway, I have so much to do about this, and I want to know if some of you were or are in a similar situation as I am. I would appreciate hearing anything about this…

Thanks!!

Tacia

Whether you process a K1 or K3, consider the timing process will take vs. school. If you are not looking to move to the USA this year, then you should hold off until you are sure.

If you process a K1 expect a waiting period of approximately 6 maybe 7 months for processing and approvals [if everything goes in order] but could be a little less.. then you have 90 days to travel to the US. As soon as you have a visa to the USA you have to use it or lose it.

We have a topic in K1 - specially for Brazilian petitioners you can read and get familiar with the process

"Peace is not the product of terror or fear. Peace is not the silence of cemeteries. Peace is not the silent result of violent repression. Peace is the generous, tranquil contribution of all to the good of all. Peace is dynamism. Peace is generosity. It is right and it is duty." -- NAPF page on Oscar Romero

Hi Tacia,

I studied in Mexico for 2 years as a teenager and had to transfer that back to a US college. What you need to look into is tranferring, so generally most colleges have a special office or person to deal with transfer students. You need to contact each college and find out their requirements for a transfer student, as you have already been doing. I would be surprised if they would accept a course list like you sent, unless your school sends off your transcripts in English. When I came from Mexico, I had to get official transcripts from my school, and then I had to send them to www.wes.org. I don't recommend that company; they were slow and rude and I had to file with the Better Business Bureau to get them to give me back my money for the quick service that never happened. However, a lot of universities require students to use WES. WES translates and evaluates your credits so the university knows how many credits to give you. But before I go through all that expense, I would find out what your university wants, because it may be easier or different. As the other poster said, you will have to wait a considerable time and the visa process is very uncertain, so you may not wait to pay for any studies until you know for sure that you will be there at that point.

Good Luck!
