Anthony Bourdain, "Treat your garlic with respect. Sliver it for pasta, like you saw in Goodfellas, don't burn it. Smash it, with the flat of your knife blade if you like, but don't put it through a press. I don't know what that junk is that squeezes out the end of those things, but it ain't garlic."

....

I like Bourdain, but I don't agree with him on the use of a garlic press.

We go through a lot of garlic. I picked sliced but actually I should have picked diced. Diced garlic goes into almost everything we cook. Or I should say everything she cooks. I eat.

Does she ever use a garlic press? And does she put in the food directly, or does she brown the garlic first?

I smash it or use it whole

Most savoury foods I cook contains some, I don't like garlic presses, they are just messy.

I do use my garlic press.... but it really depends on what I'm cooking how I prepare the garlic, but for the most part I tend to smash and chop because I'm too lazy to get the press.

When you smash it, doesn't garlic goo get all over the cutting board? That's the most pungent part and best part, IMO.

i buy those jars of minced garlic... don't have to mess around with whole garlic cloves then

I bought it once before, but the smell and flavor is just not the same as when it is freshly pressed.

I smash. Nani dices. Honestly, I smash 'cause I'm too damn lazy to dice. Garlic press? I imagine cleaning it takes a good bit of effort. Again, too lazy to even explore...

I use a paring knife to scrape out the leftover garlic after using the press and then soak it in hot water.

Well I don't use a hammer :P I smash with the back of my knife chop and scrape it up with the blade...I like the the press though, it does give that lovely goo if you don't want chunks of garlic.

you need a slapchop!

How rude!!! :hehe:

I smash, slice, or dice depending on what I'm making. I have tried using a garlic press in the past but I didn't like it too much. I have recently tried using one of those graters with the garlic but find it kind of a pain.
