We often see posters on here saying their visa got denied because they got one question wrong or didn't know one answer at the interview. While it is of course important to be prepared and know about your spouse or fiance's life, I do not think getting a couple of questions wrong will cause a denial, if you have a strong relationship and can prove this. So, to ease the fears of those who are preparing for interview, and show those who believe they got denied because of one question that there is probably more to it, I thought I'd start this thread, and encourage those who got their visa despite wrong answers to post their experiences.

I'll start:

the CO asked me when we got married. I said 1995. He said: 'Are you suuure?'. and I realised my mistake, we got married in 2005! I corrected myself, but was nervous for the rest of the interview. Thankfully, the interview only lasted a few more minutes and I got my visa.

I totally agree. My husband (fiance at the time) came with me to my K-1 interview, and the officer asked us questions together and separately. One of the questions they asked my fiance (with me standing right next to him) was when we met and my husband got the date wrong. I slapped him in the arm, and corrected him. The officer just smiled and continued on with the questions.

In some places, this good thread wouldn't apply. In Guayaquil (Ecuador), you're both essentially criminals (yes, you the USC too) even before the interview, and certainly during and afterwards. See the Embassy Reviews, Embassy Info, and thread in the U.S. Embassy forum called "U.S. Consulate in Guayaquil, Ecuador."

06-04-2007 = TSC stamps postal return-receipt for I-129f.

06-11-2007 = NOA1 date (unknown to me).

07-20-2007 = Phoned Immigration Officer; got WAC#; where's NOA1?

09-25-2007 = Touch (first-ever).

09-28-2007 = NOA1, 23 days after their 45-day promise to send it (grrrr).

10-20 & 11-14-2007 = Phoned ImmOffs; "still pending."

12-11-2007 = 180 days; file is "between workstations, may be early Jan."; touches 12/11 & 12/12.

12-18-2007 = Call; file is with Division 9 ofcr. (bckgrnd check); e-prompt to shake it; touch.

12-19-2007 = NOA2 by e-mail & web, dated 12-18-07 (187 days; 201 per VJ); in mail 12/24/07.

01-09-2008 = File from USCIS to NVC, 1-4-08; NVC creates file, 1/15/08; to consulate 1/16/08.

01-23-2008 = Consulate gets file; outdated Packet 4 mailed to fiancee 1/27/08; rec'd 3/3/08.

04-29-2008 = Fiancee's 4-min. consular interview, 8:30 a.m.; much evidence brought but not allowed to be presented (consul: "More proof! Second interview! Bring your fiance!").

05-05-2008 = Infuriating $12 call to non-English-speaking consulate appointment-setter.

05-06-2008 = Better $12 call to English-speaker; "joint" interview date 6/30/08 (my selection).

06-30-2008 = Stokes Interrogations w/Ecuadorian (not USC); "wait 2 weeks; we'll mail her."

07-2008 = Daily calls to DOS: "currently processing"; 8/05 = Phoned consulate, got Section Chief; wrote him.

08-07-08 = E-mail from consulate, promising to issue visa "as soon as we get her passport" (on 8/12, per DHL).

08-27-08 = Phoned consulate (they "couldn't find" our file); visa DHL'd 8/28; in hand 9/1; through POE on 10/9 with NO hassles(!).

I've seen two posting this week which might be the reason the OP created this thread.

One was a visa denial because the fiancee did not know the name of her fiance's high school.

The other was also a visa denial because the fiancee did not know her fiance's job title from his job in 1994.

I think denials based on missing these questions aren't really about the question. The denial is about something else deeper that the CO wants to deny the visa, but needs a solid reason. I am not sure denying a visa for missing the answer to these questions is a solid reason to deny a visa.

Good luck to any still facing the interview like my fiancee in Thailand.

IMO, if it's ih a 'high visa fraud' country -

there are different tactics used.

It's not the 'innocuous question' - ie - what's yer lass' favorite color -

but they are LOOKING for a reason to deny based on EITHER

what's in the casefile (or whats NOT in the casefile) or

something came back on all of the namechecks or

there's a red flag .

so - instead of 3 easy questions - usually - a ConOff will 'shift' into a barrage of questions, in an attempt to 'trip up' the interviewee, hoping to rattle to the point of 'getting an answer wrong', to show 'not a bonafide relationship'.

Sometimes my language usage seems confusing - please feel free to 'read it twice', just in case !
Ya know, you can find the answer to your question with the advanced search tool, when using a PC? Ditch the handphone, come back later on a PC, and try again.

I'm adding this as a comical perspective but the question is true and real and is actually asked. Believe me, if anyone gets it wrong they will be denied.

My fiancee was asked the following question as well as some friends we made that were interviewed and others we talked to at the Ho Chi Minh Consulate. The question was:

WHAT IS YOUR FINANCE"S NAME!!!!!!!!!!

Now it seems so totally stupid and I cannot imagine ANYONE EVER getting THAT question wrong.

BUT IT IS REALLY AND TRULY ASKED (in some places)

CAN YOU IMAGINE

It is also true - in high fraud consulates the answers are scrutinized to different levels.

Sometimes they will ask the same question three different ways just to try and trip you up. If you are prepared and pay attention it should not be a problem.

We had a few wrong answers, I can't even remember how many. After the interview my husband kept asking me: "how you could forget such a thing??" :P . Back then we were already together for 7 years, and spite of the wrong answers, the CO realized that we loved each other. ;)

WHAT IS YOUR FINANCE"S NAME!!!!!!!!!!

I've heard of people being denied even though they answered this question correctly, just because the CO didn't think they could pronounce it very well. The CO concluded that the beneficiary had not uttered her fiance's name enough to have mastered the pronunciation, and therefore the relationship must have been a sham. The Vietnamese language, for example, does not have a sound that corresponds to the letter "J". Because of this, the French missionary who designed their Latin based scripting system didn't include the letter "J" in their alphabet. Many Vietnamese attempt to pronounce this as if it were "CH", but they are reluctant to pronounce my name this way because the result is a very rude word in Vietnamese.

Anyway, this whole topic depends entirely on the consulate and the individual case. When a CO denies a visa because the beneficiary failed to answer one seemingly insignificant question correctly, you can bet that the single question was not the REAL reason for denying the visa. The REAL reason is because they thought the relationship smelled like rotten fish, but the CO's gut instinct is not a valid reason to deny a visa. When they start asking questions like this then they are fishing for a reason to put on the 221 denial notice because they've already decided they're going to deny the visa. If you focus on the specific question they asked, you could be barking up the wrong tree. You have to look at the entire interview to determine what happened.

At the consulate in Beirut they asked my husband so many stupid questions before they interviewed me. Then I walked in and was a little bit rude (I am the u.s. citizen), my big pregnant stomach was hard to miss too. He just said oh, when will you have your baby  and when did you get married. Then he said to come back with affidavit of support and birth certificate if the baby is born so he can issue the visa. I think I scared him because when I walked in it was obvious I was an evil pregnant woman in the middle of Beirut summer and not in the mood to play.

They did investigative calls on us earlier this week... like an interview over the phone... they asked so many questions... Thuy got confused on two address related questions when she mixed up the numbers... when I talked to my mother about it later that day, she said if they called her.. she would have missed those questions and likely many more.. my own mother... how can they expect someone that lives around the world from you and has never been to the US to answer specific details about your city and home...
