You're lucky! We only have one Pinoy store/restaurant here in Austin and it's a 20-minute drive away. :crying: Good thing we have other Asian restaurants around.

We are very fortunate to have several Filipino restaurants and markets in the area.

What are the name of filipino restaurants here in Seattle? I'm here for the weekends for my workshop. Do you have any suggestion?

1. Inay's Restaurant...one of our favorites...a turo-turo before 4 pm...a sit-down after 4 pm...excellent lumpia...inihaw...pinakbet...dinuguan...caldereta...2503 Beacon Avenue South...on Beacon Hill.

2. Kawali Grill...a sit-down restaurant...another one of our favorites...excellent prawn appetizer...bulalo...sinigang...crispy pata...calamansi iced tea...Filipino breakfasts...5300 Rainier Avenue South...in Rainier Valley.

3. Manila's Pride...a turo-turo and sari-sari...good sisig...tuyo...leche flan...1500 South 336th Street...in Federal Way.

4. Manila Grove Restaurant...a sit-down restaurant...good lumpia...kare-kare...18230 East Valley Highway...inside the Great Wall Shopping Center in Kent.

5. Family Time Restaurant...a sit-down restaurant...good breakfasts...15200 Aurora Avenue North, Suite C..in the Parkwood Plaza Shopping Center in Shoreline.

6. Philippine Island Cuisine...good pork binagoongan...5020 University Way NE...in the University District.

7. Kusina Filipina...a good turo-turo...good paksiw na bangus...3201 Beacon Avenue South...on Beacon Hill.

You need to think of the PI like the USA.. I grew up in Iowa and you can't find grits and collared greens and stuff like that common in the South... So,, even thought there are basic Filipino foods that are common to all Filipinos.. Some are local. My wife is from Zamboanga by the ocean. She has been here 6 months,,, and we can get several fish and leafy vegetables that she likes here,,, but, even though we have large Asian food stores here with maybe a dozen different fish, a full butcher section and large section of vegetables, fruits, etc,,, Still can't get Manila Mangos, New Coconut, etc... But, she does not complain,,, just knows what she is missing,,

Bottom Line Your Mileage Will Vary, no matter where you go in this world,,, something will be missing. I suspect.. She would give up Filipino food, if she could have her mother here.

Regards,

Right, same here.. I'd give up Filipino foods for my mom :)

I use spinach to substitute a lot of veggies that I cannot find here. Like instead of malunggay and ampalaya leaves for monggo, i use spinach. Some of my Pinay friends here use it for tinola too. Mostly, I sautee it with every meat I can find in my fridge. Might sound different too, but I cook lettuce with ground pork or beef as well (like ginisa style) with soy sacuce. My hubby likes pouring it over with his rice. Catfish is good for paksiw too, just put a lot of ginger to taste better!

We use tony sacheres to substitute magic sarap or other Filipino spices!

Being the bunso (youngest kid), I was never responsible for cooking back in the Phils. I could hardly boil water (hehehe). But, I easily figured out cooking 'real' foods, when I first saw my hubby's fridge stuffed with hot pockets, pizzas and junkies!!!
