Hello all,

Not been in a while ... curious how many of you been in your SO's country for extended amount of time? Would you live there? if they asked you to? ... And donnot be quick to reply ' yes, I love them' cos the image of their exotic homeland you see while on the visits is always the real thing!

Also curious, love aside, if they got denied or really for whatever reason not want to come to the US or prehaps after they came they simply wanted to go back, would you pack up everything and go too?

I ask these things, cos well many of you who know me know I relocated to my SO's country; with common sense I knew it would not be a holiday paradise ... but even so some days I hit my head against the wall for coming, other days I am at peace and actually happy ... so just curious what you thought ... I am especially interested to hear form the those living with their SOs ;..living with their habits and culture ;..;

As it stands now, no I wouldn't live in Algeria. We've been married for almost 8 years now. He was deported after 5 years of marriage and living together in the US, was gone for 27 months, and just came back home 7 months ago. I have no illusions about Algeria being a fun exotic place to live. Life is difficult and because of our son's heart condition I feel that it is not the best move for our family. If my husband decided that we should live in Algeria I would find it extremely selfish on his part because he knows our son cannot receive the high level of care he requires there.

Add to that all of the extreme cultural expectations of women, I just don't think it would be good for our marriage.

If there came a day when we were more financially stable and we could live a comfortable life in Algeria where our son could travel to the US for his medical care, then I might consider it.

In our case, I'm the one moving there in the US.. I've never dreamed or even thought about moving to the US before meeting John.. My original plan was finish my studies and may be enroll for a scholarship in the UK then come back to Egypt and be a university professor... When he proposed and we became engaged our original plan was to live in Egypt, then for many reasons like the economy, education, and cultural stereotypes we decided it's better that I move to the US. Of course, there are other personal reasons that might not apply to anyone in the thread.

I'm not in America yet, but looking back at our original plan now I think we made the right decision... And I think John would have not been able to adapt easily to living in the Egypt... I'm not stereotypical by any means, but I think if you and your SO are not upper-middle-class AT LEAST financially and socially speaking, you won't be able to have a decent life in the Middle East... It sounds sad, but it's the truth...

We both 100% do agree that we do not want our children to spend their teen years in the US.. I do not think we are going to change our minds about that decision, but when the time comes and we are financially more stable, we are going to discuss the matter with our children...

Yes, I will move there. It will be hard, not financially, but because I have health problems, but it is the only way we can be together. His visa was denied and my approved petition has been back at USCIS since mar 31, 2009. When will they officially close it?? Maybe tomorrow, maybe 5 years from now, who knows.

I lived in Rabat for one month, October 2007. I was just so happy to be with him. I don't go out much anyway because I tire easily. I like different cultures; I used to live/teach on the Navajo Reservation. In fact, some of Morocco reminds me of Northeastern Arizona. Living on the reservation was a culture shock for me, but I adjusted and grew to love it and the people. It was like living in a third world country. So many people didn't have running water or electricity, and chopped wood for heating fuel. Also, there were not many paved roads. Goats and sheep roamed everywhere. I think I will also adjust to Morocco.

I will have to return to US for medical visits. At that time, I can visit with my family.

I would definitely live in Morocco. The longest I've stayed there was 6 weeks and I already felt comfortable with its culture and society. As far as the language, I will need to learn Darija, but I know enough to communicate. I know mostly Egyptian Arabic so all the Moroccans who meet me think I'm Egyptian. As far as religion, I follow Islam so there is no conflict there. The plan is for my fiance to come the US to meet my family and live here while I finish school. Once I finish school (maybe 2 years?) we will most likely head back to Morocco. We may even move to Spain or France, but it's just talk for now. The truth is, since I was a kid, I have always imagined living in an Eastern country-specifically Middle Easy/North African. Also, my fiance love his country and he doesn't really have a desire to live in the US. We both agree with Aya-we want to raise our children in Morocco.

Oh, and if for some reason my fiance is not granted a visa, I will move to Morocco in a heartbeat!

I would. It wouldn't be ideal of course, but if it was my only option to be with him, I would definitely move there in a heartbeat. I stayed 7 months with him there, and it was difficult at times, but it is doable. I wouldn't be happy here without him.

If he wanted to move back to Egypt, I wouldn't probably agree. We do want to move back there for maybe a year or two, but not permanently. Life is more manageable here, and even he can agree on that point. When we have kids later on, I think it will be even more important education wise.

I have a child from a previous relationship, and her father would never let me move her out of the US, so that would be a huge problem for us. If it came to it, I would probably have to split my time between being with him, and spending time in the US with my kiddo. It would be a horrific decision, in any case.

If we had to live in Morocco, then I would prefer to do so with money, as has been mentioned already. But if we had to live there without alot of money for some reason, no I would not split up with my husband to avoid that!

We'd always talked about moving to Morocco at some point, but we have no immediate plans to do so. I think DH wants to have some sort of international business before we do that, so I won't be holding my breath!
