While Ms. Medina appears in recent polls to be above 10 percent, few political strategists give her a chance of winning, though she may force a runoff between Mr. Perry and Ms. Hutchison. Several recent polls show Mr. Perry with 40 percent to 50 percent of the vote, while Ms. Hutchison has 20 percent to 30 percent.

That's a shame. This could have been entertaining.

On the Democratic side, former Mayor Bill White of Houston appeared to be coasting to an easy victory over his only challenger, Farouk Shami, a businessman who made a fortune in hair-care products.

If I lived in Texas I'd vote for the shampoo guy. Our political system needs better smelling hair. That's what's really wrong with this country.

Doesn't anyone learn American history any longer? We played out this little drama. It took over 600,000 Union and Confederate losses, countless civilian losses and billions in damage to property, and decades of Reconstruction to see what happens when America pulls itself apart. Who are these people that actually want to repeat that experience?

Texas had little to do with the Civil War and effectively out the war once the Mississippi was secured by the Union early in the war.

Decades of Reconstruction? Wasn't it officially over by 1877?

I'm more worried about who is now running Washington than a candidate third in the polls in a single state. Wait the paranoia about militias kicks in as it did in the 1990s.

The man most likely to be Governor of Texas after the next election, Perry, has also talked up secession.

I wasn't referring specifically to Texas in my "don't people know their history" comment. I was referring to the cavalier manner in which people talk today of secession and how they "hate the United States". I would make the same comment if the person speaking were in a former Confederate state such as Texas, or in any other present state of the Union. (By the way - Texas was one of the last to be readmitted to the Union, in 1870).

You are correct that Reconstruction ended officially in 1877. It's aftermath, in terms of the physical reconstruction of destroyed homes, businesses, farms and families continued much longer. So too did the political aftermath (Jim Crow laws, anti-Republican backlash in the South, etc.) which lasted many decades into the 20th century, right up to the Civil Rights era.

He's been the governor of Texas since 2000 so I'm not too worried.

If Texas leaves the Union, I'll start believing in your insightful political predictions. Until then, you're a guy in one the worst states in debt while worrying about trolls and elves winning elections in Middle Earth.

Relax, cowboy. Your state has a sizable 'knowledge economy' of its own, even though you likely play no part in it.

oh aren't you just so cute.....

You're right, Texas does have knowledge, but we aren't a 'blue' state either. We actually are quite diverse in nature despite what many may know or believe.

In a 'technical' sense even we are a Democratic State, BUT a 'blue dog' Democrat as they are referred to today (yet that classification doesn't really exist in the Democratic party anymore). Texas is only Republican now because of how Democrats have flown the coupe to the left.

Most Texans will always consider themselves Texans before Americans and that's what makes us different than most other states. We believe in and are a part of the United States because of the Constitution. State's rights are a big deal in this state and are alive and well. To some that may seem 'extreme' but that's only to certain people who have no understanding of the constitution OR like certain Aussie's here who feel its an outdated document written by a bunch of old men. ;)

I'm aware and appreciative of the economic diversity in Texas. The metropolitan areas within Texas are economically dynamic and are full of very smart people. It's the hicks who make the state look bad. People like Medina.

Austin is quite cool. Most Austinites wouldn't be caught dead in Texas. Oh. Wait. :P

Who says it's a case of HATE?

It's more like irreconcilable differences.

Perhaps Jefferson voiced this best.

Believe me, dear Sir: there is not in the British empire a man who more cordially loves a union with Great Britain than I do. But, by the God that made me, I will cease to exist before I yield to a connection on such terms as the British Parliament propose; and in this, I think I speak the sentiments of America.

—Thomas Jefferson, November 29, 1775

I doubt were are there now but at some point the question might be asked by a majority..... -Just why are we yoked together?
