hey,

finally, we did it. I'm in USA as a LPR. It was a long, stressful, anxious journey. I have applied for my social security number:

www.socialsecuirty.gov

That should come in 2 weeks. What do I have to file next to become a Citizen? What are the forms called etc. Also hoow long is my Visa valid for? I got told it was for 2 years, but not sure.

Best of Luck. Best wishes. Thank you.

Hi, I think the visa is void as soon as you enter the USA.

As for your LPR status it depends on how long you have been married when you got the approval, if less than 2 years then you will receive a conditional Green Card good for only 2 years.

Before those 2 years are done you'll have to file to remove conditions in order to obtain a 10 year green card.

For citizenship based on being married to a USC, you have to wait 3 years if I'm not mistaken.

I-751 package sent : 03/30/2012

I-751 receipt date : 04/03/2012

Don't bet on SSN coming in 2 weeks; be lucky if it comes in 2 months.

This Friday we will have been waiting 2 months.

that visa stamp PLUS the POE stamp will serve as a temporary I-551, green card, usually up to 1 year.

the visa stamp will allow for multiple entries into the usa, up to the date the POE stamp expires.

re: ssn - you applied online? cool. most ppl go into a ssa office, apply in person.

within 1 week to 6 weeks, you should receive the green card.

Welcome to USA !! If you want to work, soonish, grab an I-9 form, practice filling it out with yer passport and the stamps in it.

It's been a while since my last post. I've been enjoying my time with my wife. I arrived here in the US last Feb. 16, and also waiting for greencard & SSN. We tried to apply for a learner's permit but the DMV is asking for at least 2 valid US ID's, but I only have one, the visa in my passport. :( I also wanted to start applying for work, but I'm not sure how am I going to do it without my SSN or green card.

And by the way, I think there is an option on the forms we filled up during the visa processing about the SSN application, and I marked it YES, do I have to apply again in person or just wait till they mail it to me? Thanks again.

Hey,

Sorry no worries. Just called them, you are right I have to go in person to collect the number. They have already dispatched the card on Monday to me. Apparently it comes from Maryland. I hopefully should receive it by this week. Now I can finally get a bank account number and other things

Best of Luck. Best wishes. Thank you.

Most places will use an I-9 form to verify that you are legal to work in the USA.

Please study it - it is available for download on a gov website.

As things have 'wound down' - you've got what?

1. a foreign passport.

2. a visa stamp, allowing you into the country.

3. a POE stamp, which in conjunction with the visa stamp, gives you 1 year validity of being an LPR (is temp I-551 document, a temp 'green card')

4. a SSN card (or at least a number).

now take the I-9, match up what you have, with what the 'document list requirement' is.

You should be 'good to go', rather soonish.

The I-9 form is required by most employers, so that THEY don't get into trouble with hiring an illegal alien, or someone here on a tourist visa, etc.

Basically - for an employer, the I-9 'vettes' for them, that you are ''legal to work' in the USA.

Think of it like a game of tennis? Yer on one side, with yer stack of documents and IDs.

The employer is on the other side, waiting 'to catch' the I-9 document.

The I-9 form is a form that the EMPLOYER supplies to his employees that basically says that the person they have hired is eligible to work. It's something they have you fill out when you get a job.
