Going to get Washington State Drivers License, Will I have to give up my British Columbia DL??? Anyone?

I'll defer to someone living in Washington State to know better than I will. In New York State, they take your Canadian license in favor of your new New York license, which Canadian provinces honor as valid permission to drive.

I'm in SC too, and I asked if it was possible if I could keep my BC license as a keepsake. I just thought they'd punch a hole in it or something. She said, because it's out of country, they can't keep it, but if it was just out of state they would, so she gave it back whole. Yay! I have the "pretty" BC one, and I know that they've gone back to more of a "bland" one.

Just tell them you'd like to keep your BC one. They may just punch a hole, (or not).

YES...i do beleive it is illegal to possess Two DL's ....

I don't believe it is, actually. It's illegal to possess two state ids but I think the rules on out of country ids are a little bit more blurry. I still have my Ontario license.

"...My hair's mostly wind,

My eyes filled with grit

My skin's white then brown

My lips chapped and split

I've lain on the prairie and heard grasses sigh

I've stared at the vast open bowl of the sky

I've seen all the castles and faces in clouds

My home is the prairie and for that I am proud…

If You're not from the Prairie, you can't know my soul

You don't know our blizzards; you've not fought our cold

You can't know my mind, nor ever my heart

Unless deep within you there's somehow a part…

A part of these things that I've said that I know,

The wind, sky and earth, the storms and the snow.

Best say that you have - and then we'll be one,

For we will have shared that same blazing sun." - David Bouchard

Out of curiousity really - why do you care? You're no longer a legal resident of BC so you can't legally use it....for sentimental reasons I can understand.

Being from BC you're not required to take the complete driving exam in WA. State. People from BC , Germany and other US States do not have to take the actual driving test they just show their out of State license for a WA. license.

Where as others must take the full exam written and driving.

Not sure whether they keep your out of State license, with my being from N.S I had to take the full exam so no use in presenting my N.S. license to them

Here in CO they let me keep my Ontario license- they just punched a whole through the corner making it invalid. I keep it for sentimental reasons as well, also just so I have something that still has my maiden name on it, you never know when you'll need it.

here in Cali it says right in the drivers handbook that they are supposed to take your license but the lady just looked at it and seemed to copy something down from it and handed it back to me...

it is expired now, so it really is of no use to me anymore :P

I moved from B.C. to Washington State and got my WA dl in Sept 08, they just punch a hole in it and give it back to you (just found it in my drawer). You are lucky, they just changed it right after I got mine to being treated like moving from another state. I had to take my written and road test again.....pretty scary after having my license for 28 years!!!!!

Hi Biglos,

I have no idea about Washington State...but....

I'll defer to someone living in Washington State to know better than I will. In New York State, they take your Canadian license in favor of your new New York license, which Canadian provinces honor as valid permission to drive.

Likewise, the same happened to me too....

Gave my Canadian (Ontario G2 restricted) driver's license in exchange for an American (New York State) one...

No complaints really, as there was no testing required! No need for another road and/or written test!....

10 mins..In and out....With temporary license...

And 2 weeks later...A full 4yr license...No restrictions....

Funny too, how my Green Card was valid at the time for 2 yrs and my Driver's license was valid for 4 yrs.....Oh well...

No further questions asked....(see my VJ timeline for more info)..

I didn't need 2 driver's licenses! Lol..Especially not a Canadian one in my maiden name! Glad to get rid of that one....

Each state is different..And if Washington State offers a direct no-testing transfer of a Canadian driver's license..You're in luck there!

I'd like to keep it for sentimental reasons...after all we are the 2010 VANCOUVER OLYMPIC GOLD HOCKEY WINNERS!! Proud to be from Canada AND Vancouver!!!

Likewise, I am sentimental about documents too (yeah, I'm weird that way)....

So this is what I did: Photocopied my Canadian driver's license before I turned it in...

And to this day, I still have that photocopy..Good enough for me

(and good enough for the insurance company to add my name to the policy too..as an 'experienced driver', not as a new driver)

So I encourage you, and everyone else to make a photocopy of your Canadian license before you have to turn it in for a US one....

It works out well....You only have 1 legal license, and a copy of another one to keep for sentimental reasons...:)

Hope this helps. Good luck with the rest of your journey too.
