Hey all, I have a quick question with respect to completing the I 864 for the joint sponsor.

Does the joint sponsor have to complete the entire form or just the section that would be required for his or her information ie identification, financial information etc? The remainder of the form deals with the immigrant (beneficiary) etc. The primary sponsor is already completing the entire form so I"m left wondering if the joint sponsor must do the same ie completing the entire form or not.

Thanks all.

Hi Zenaxe,

By the way, here is something that I posted before on VJ for another VJer, but I thought it might help you out too...

In my situation......

The Sponsor (my husband) completed one I-864 form (which I have a copy of before I gave it to the lawyer that I used for the AOS).

The Co-Sponsor completed another I-864 form (which I don't have a copy of, as we gave that to the lawyer right away).

And likewise, in your situation, you have to hand in 2 separate I-864 forms (one from the sponsor, one from the co-sponsor) in your case.

Your spouse (the sponsor) fills out the following on their form:

21.

a. 1 (persons you are sponsoring...you, the immigrant)

b. 1 (your spouse)

c. 0 (spouse...you the immigrant...but you were already mentioned before on line 21 a...so no need to count that again)

d. 0 (dependent children..assuming your spouse has no children)

e. 0 (other dependents...assuming your spouse has no dependents)

f. 0 (did not sponsor any other person...assuming your spouse has not sponsored anyone else)

g. 0 (does your siblings, parents, adult children, live with you...assuming your spouse doesn't have such living with them)

f. Add all the numbers together....

Your Co-sponsor fills out the following on their form:

21.

a. 1 (persons you are sponsoring....you, the immigrant)

b. 1 (your co-sponsor)

c. ? (your co-sponsor's spouse or not)

d. ? (your co-sponsor's dependent children)

e. ? (your co-sponsor's other dependents)

f. ? (did your co-sponsor sponsor any other person)

g. ? (does your co-sponsor have siblings, parents, adult children, that live with them)

f. Add all the numbers together....

And the total from the 2 forms (using the above stated example numbers):

Sponsor: Family size.....

Co-Sponsor: Family size....

Grand Total...."Combined Household" size...

Hope this helps as well. Good luck with the rest of our immigration journey too.

Hey Ant, thanks very much for the help. I didn't see this post until now. Also my wife did clear the 125% for 2009 so it seems given that we may not need a cosponsor. My concern was that because she was a student for the years prior, she didn't make enough and wondered about that. So we considered and have a cosponsor. However, we would prefer to just go with her as sponsor given her last year's taxes and earnings etc.
