Does calling the NVC and Embassy cost money?

We got our NOA2 recently and will need to call so we were wondering if it costs money. We'll mainly just want to check on our case status, but might have other questions. Does talking to them cost money?

And what info will we need for them to be able to look up our information? Our NOA2 number? Will they send us another number?

Or do we just need our names?

If you're in the US, calling the NVC is whatever your long distance is. If you have free long distance with your cell or VoIP, it's free. If you don't, it's whatever you pay.

Calling the embassy will be an international call from the US, and whatever long distance you have from the country the embassy is in.

So they won't ask for a credit card or charge my phone bill a ridiculous amount to talk to a representative?

It'll just be the standard phone fees?

Contacting the Tokyo Embassy, is essentially a waste of time. They will most likely refer you to a "Pay per call" information number, that doesn't have any additional info than what you'll find on their website....and I recall you don't even get to speak to a real person. As I recall, you leave a message, and they call or email you with their response.

That said, I was able to accomplish some re-scheduling by speaking to the Tokyo Embassy, but if I didn't have basic Nihongo skills, there's no way I would've gotten past the first level operator...who was always Nihonjin with limited English skills and even more limited patience.
