Hello Everyone,

We've been out of the loop for the past few years, living without worry about paperwork, filing fees, etc. Now that it is time to prepare my husband's citizenship application, I'm curious about the supporting evidence people send in. I've read the guides and seen the recommended pieces, but still have a few questions.

Is the purpose to show that we have a genuine marriage, that we live here in the US, or both?

How much is too much?

I don't want to annoy whoever opens the packet...

Thanks for all your help and best of luck to all.

I am interested to see what replies you get, as reading the USCIS instructions for N-400 it seems all they need is photo's, copy of PR card and the form....assuming you have no criminal convictions etc.

I find this very hard to believe but have yet to find other evidence myself!?

There were several people who wrote what they mailed with their package. A lot of people send in several of the listed items such as tax returns, children's birth cerificates, bank accounts, etc....

I am sure if you spend 10 minutes or so on the threads in the US Citizenship General Discussion, you will be able to see what others have mailed.

I sent in the minimum of what was asked since I had sent in the year before a huge package for the I-751. I did bring a package of up to date documents that proved we were still married and living together with me to the interview but she wasn't interested. She reviewed my application, checked my passport to verify dates out of the country (only effective for one trip, mind you), went over all of the questions and copies of the documents, etc. I asked her if she wanted to see the originals of anything and she said' no, thanks' this is fine. It was quite painless. So, I would suggest that you provide exactly what is listed - if you use the tax transcripts you don't need to send in all of the other types of validating information - and prepare a package of additional supporting material to bring with you to the interview, since you know you are going to have an interview. Your file is really not looked at in any detail until the interview anyway so it is the same person you would provide the additional evidence to who is making a decision on your application.

Follow the Guide to Naturalization provided at the USCIS website - it has a document checklist you can use that is very helpful.

“...Isn't it splendid to think of all the things there are to find out about? It just makes me feel glad to be alive--it's such an interesting world. It wouldn't be half so interesting if we knew all about everything, would it? There'd be no scope for imagination then, would there?”

Do you do everything for your husband? If so, make sure HE signs the N-400 form it though. After all, for the first time this step is all about him, not you.

There is no room in this country for hyphenated Americanism. When I refer to hyphenated Americans, I do not refer to naturalized Americans. Some of the very best Americans I have ever known were naturalized Americans, Americans born abroad. But a hyphenated American is not an American at all . . . . The one absolutely certain way of bringing this nation to ruin, of preventing all possibility of its continuing to be a nation at all, would be to permit it to become a tangle of squabbling nationalities, an intricate knot of German-Americans, Irish-Americans, English-Americans, French-Americans, Scandinavian-Americans or Italian-Americans, each preserving its separate nationality, each at heart feeling more sympathy with Europeans of that nationality, than with the other citizens of the American Republic . . . . There is no such thing as a hyphenated American who is a good American. The only man who is a good American is the man who is an American and nothing else.
