My fiancé is a Ukrainian citizen and Ukrainian national. But she was born in Baku, Azerbaijan (one of the former soviet republics). She moved to Ukraine in 1990. She has her original birth certificate from Baku, Azerbaijan. The Republic of Azerbaijan was part of the Soviet Union when she was born. Now it is an independent country. Can she use this original birth certificate for her K1 visa interview? Is it valid? She is afraid that she has to go back to Azerbaijan to get new birth certificate.

Do you know if old style soviet era birth certificates are still valid for the interview?

Did your fiancé use old style soviet era birth certificate or new one?

Thank you very much for your help!!!!!

Yes, she can use her old birth certificate.

Of course. :) This is her birth certificate, even if the nation that issued it no longer exists.

Mine used the Soviet style.

Best of luck to you!

Alla used her old BC. Remember to put USSR for the country of her birth but Ukraine or Russia or whatever as the country of her current residence.

Phil (Lockport, near Chicago) and Alla (Lobnya, near Moscow)

As of Dec 7, 2009, now Zero miles apart (literally)!

My wife's green card said "USSR" on it as place of birth. Quite a funny look from the border guard at Buffalo when we came back through. Then he asked, "So where are you from?"

She said, "Ohio."

Your SO will probably have different countries listed in several places on different documents, the important thing is you put the right ones in the right place. USSR is a good default for anything from her childhood and her current country of residence should be the answer to all other questions.

The US consulate and USCIS will accept any and all official government birth certificates. We run into this problem often (question, actually, not a problem) In our family we have USSR, Russian Federation and Ukrainian birth certificates, all for Ukrainian births. All were accepted. Alla does translations of Russian and Ukrainian documents (and has done Russian language bith certificates from Armenia and Georgia). No worries.

Yes, it should be listed as "Azerbijan SSR", though this is a technicality that would probably not cause an issue in general. I did list Alla's place of birth as "Ukraine SSR"
