My grandfather had a TT. Standard issue for officers in the army. Damn that was a cool gun. When I was a kid, I could barely hold i up it was so heavy

The Marines used to say that our Colt 1911s back in the day had just as much stopping power if you threw one at the enemy. When you ran out of ammo just hit him center mast with the gun.

Now please go start your own thread so you can ask a moderator to close it so you can then drag the poopiness of that closed thread to another thread and then proclaim "mah thredz powah beeyotches cuz Stalin-MLK Day iz teh stoopid!!!"

Mox, it was Gary (Yes Man) who first brought the "poopiness" over to this thread. You got your facts wrong...again.

True that. My father met up with the Russians at the end of WW2 and of course the soldiers exchanged firearms and tried out each others guns. The Russians thought the M1911 was a "Cowboy Gun" or "Horse Pistol" and were impressed by the big, fat bullets. They also gave credit to the Americans for being something of strong men for hefting M1s, M1911s, Thompsons, etc. Even the M3 Grease gun was quite a handful at over 8 pounds.

Sorry. I got myself an early start on celebrating День космонавтики and am now so #######-faced that I can't really tell who started flinging the poo first. When I get back from my flag burning protest of Veteran's Day (they're gonna have latte!!) I'll try to sort it all out.

Let me set the record straight, the Makarov is an excellent pistol. I know because I own one. And it's from Russia. The pistol is accurate, a good size to carry, reliable, single action and has a decocker. What more do you want? My only complaint is the magazine release is not in a good place.

My son just traded a .22 Ruger Marksman for a Romanian Tokarev. He likes it but US import laws require a safety be added. Yes, the original Tokarev had no safety. The one added is a real POS. But it packs a wallop.

But I'd take a Makarov over the Tok any day. The best Maks were made in East Germany and you used to be able to find them but not now. The Bulgarian Maks were hot sellers a few years ago but most of them have been taken. At one point, you could buy one for around $175.00 but they bring much more now.

The Makarov is a "value engineered" copy of the German Walther PPK. Admittedly, something was lost in the translation.

That's not the first time the Russians have "copied" something from the rest of the world and lost a little in translation. Probably won't be the last.

In "Rio Bravo" (I think, the film where his grandson is kidnapped) it was set in 1910 and John Waynes son (in the movie and real life) used a M1910 Bergman-Bayard which was the wonderment of all the cowboys in the film.

There was another movie (I forget the name of it now) where he was using a .45 in 1909 - allegedly a gift from the Brownings. (Could be the same movie, I don't recall.)

just hit him center mast with the gun.

Is that a shooting term or a sailing term? Oh wait, we're talking Marine Corps - they do a little of both.

I don't know about Bulgarian but you can still find Maks (and Chinese knock-offs) at gun shows sometimes for around $250.

Tke Makarov was inspired by Czech and German designs but was improved in a number of ways. Chrome lined barrel, better safety, a better magazine design, and the Mak 9x18 round is more powerful.

At auction a Russian Mak can fetch $450. The Bulgarian about $350. Much higher than a few years ago. The cost to quality ratio for a Mak is good IMO.

 That it is. Only downside is trying to find ammo at Wal-Mart is usually a no go. As long as you buy a few hundred rounds when you buy your pistol, you should be good to go.

I'm apprehensive to buy anything that I can't get ammo for at Wal-Mart simply because anything "more exotic" (read: less common) may dry up or become super expensive at some point.

On the way!

You may have them all. I shall not run up the price at auction by bidding against you. The MAK would be one of the guns I would choose...for my enemy to be armed with.

I think the Cossacks had a saying for this...

Kepp your breakfast to yourself, share your lunch and give your dinner and your MAK to your enemy.

Now that's a new one. I might have to have Alla translate for me.

Ask your wife. Definitely a Ukrainian/Rus saying, and I was told it was a Cossack thing, by Ukrainians who tend to be biased on such things.
