I love the .45, but nothing can take the place of the 1911.

I like the Glocks, Sigs, Springfield XDs, and really like the H&K USPs, but the way I see it, if you're going to go .45, the 1911 is where it's at.

You and Slim will probably flame me for saying this, but I just can't get comfortable with the idea of the 1911 with the hammer cocked back in a holster at my back. I know the thought is pure fiction, but I trained young with revolvers and cannot stop worrying about shooting my own azz off this way. On the other hand, a slim 1911 would be one helluvalot more comfy back there.

I was there for a while... until I had an incident where I would've been killed had it gone another way. After that, I started carrying cocked and locked and never looked back. If you're really worried about it, chamber a round, put on the safety, then roll your gun down the sidewalk. It won't go off. (I've tried! Inadvertantly, of course, but I've dropped it so many times I'm positive it won't go off.) Also, find me one case - a single case - of a 1911 firing while safeties are on. It just doesn't happen.

As for a slim 1911, all single stacks are pretty slim, even the full size models. I was actually pretty surprised how easy it was to carry a full size 1911 because it's so thin. I have a double stack and it's still not too bad. Way slimmer than a wheelgun, that's for sure!

If you're really that worried, Para offers a DAO 1911 now. You could carry hammer down.

recently bought a Sig Sauer P238 which is a small .380 version in the 1911 tradition. It's basically a Colt Mustang. Great conceal carry gun.

I saw that in American Rifleman magazine. Looked like a pretty good little piece.

I have lamented the Army's decision to go with the Beretta 9mm. A sell out to NATO. The reason...better to fire off more rounds than to become accurate and proficient with a 1911 45. It is not easy to get good with the 1911 but once you do...you're the boss.

I carried the Beretta for a long time. It's a pretty decent handgun. Like the switch to the M-16, people don't like it but it is perfectly capable of getting the job done. We used to say, "you have more shots because you need more shots."

The Army's changed their doctrine quite a bit from precision marksmanship at distance to rapid deployment of rounds downrange - suppressive fire - even from the individual soldier. They're finding that to work OK in places like downtown Ramadi, but in places like the Khyber Pass... not so much. We're seeing a redeployment of M-14s and some units are starting to issue 1911s again and sometimes Sigs. The Marines have been using Kimbers for quite a while. Individual soldiers have even purchased their own 1911s and of course, Spec Ops was smart enough to never switch at all.

The M-9 is a sidearm, the M-1911, not so much. Like the old sarge in We Were Soldiers, "I'll be just fine with my .45."

The 1911 I carried saved my #### when my M-16 jammed. Dropped to NVA soldiers trying to break through my position. When you see the power of the 45 on a man, you can only be in awe of its stopping power and the level of damage that a 45 round can deliver...even with a full metal jacket round.

I'd never want to be on the receiving end of any round, let alone a .45.

Beretta 9's are a beautiful piece. Colt 1911's are beautiful piece. Beretta is a little more "chunky" in my palm, but comfortable... I'd still take the Colt over it any day of the week.

I guess a little history is due on my part. I was, for lack of a better word, abused, on shooting. I was engaged many, many years ago to a gal whose dad was the proverbial "gun freak". I say that lightly in light of the many other gun "freaks" here. (there is nothing wrong with it). Her father was a disabled vet from Vietnam who liked me oh so much as a future son in law. Since his own flesh and blood son was, how do I say, a fukup, he moved me into his place. For my high school graduation he bought me a grease sealed SKS that was god knows how many years old, but essentially new. He taught me how to field strip it, again and again... and again. He taught me how to reload for it and mobs of other calibers. For my 21st birthday he took me to the shooting range to get my CC which consisted of a .454 Casule and .50 LAR Grizzly. "Better to qualify higher than what you carry in case you have to carry higher!"... This man market dealt with AR15/AK upper and lower receivers and Barret model 50 parts. He knew people from all over the world and made himself a nice little living trading. We would shoot on average 3-4 thousand rounds a week. That's no joke and I ever lowered those number because what I'm really think we shot is just stupid. I had thick calluses between my thumb and pointer finger for Christs sake. Once that callous developed he thought I was ready for "speed shooting"... What a PITA. We would spend 3-4 hours, 4 times a week doing speed drills. Guy even had a speed gun built for me. A blue anodized ported and polished beauty that a freaking butterfly could shoot. (Side note, someone else less neurotic could have convinced me that it was a good lifestyle) And we trained... and trained... And trained. I didn't sign up for this mind you. I was young, it was fun at first. But it was something for him... I used to like going out and shooting with him, good quality time if you will. But it was so serious... I got burnt out. I could out shoot any of my buddies at the local range because it was muscle memory for me. I looked like a robot. It's funny, if me and my friends went out I would be the "pro" shooter with my 3 portable bags, 6 firearms and just an #### ton of ammo and then they would have their main pieces and a box of generic. It looked impressive to them, but it rarely was fun. It felt like practice. Hip to position, bam bam, done. Hip to position, bam bam, done. If I hear center of mass one more time...

Last call for me (other than ending it with a former fiance) was blowing a hole 2 inches from my toe when he was making me drill. I caught the trigger of my highly modified 1911 on the holster and it went off with the trigger pressure of a butterflies wings... I knew it happened and I tried to tell him... but he wouldn't listen to until after the 10th shot.

All that aside. A stock (lightly ported, you still want to feel some power) 1911 will always be my gun of choice.

WOW!

I know what you mean though... after a while, it's work. Once you take the "sport" out of shooting, it's just not as fun. It's really cool to be at the level, but like you said, it's really cool.... at first.

I love shooting, but when I shoot too much and my body starts getting aches and pains I have to remind myself, "this is supposed to be fun."

I really like the Colt Commander sized 1911. It just feels well-balanced and a better conceal carry size.

That's why I like my Warthog. Perfect for carrying.

What? And scuff up all the chrome and gold bling I paid more for than I paid for the gun?!!??

You have "rims" on your car too, don't you?

I was at the range Sunday night and a buddy of mine had his tricked-out, super cool AR carbine resting against the divider. He was showing me something on his pistol and when I stepped forward, I kicked his AR and it fell to the ground. "Oh sh!t. Sorry, dude." He was like, "awww don't even worry about it. That's a weapon."

It was so nice to have someone understand what a weapon is truly for. While I understand "pretty guns" have their place, that place shouldn't be too far outside of the gun safe.

This would be the one conversation that is killing me... I haven't shot a pistol in over 10 years and now thinking about those "glory years" and just now checking out some deals online... damn.

I think I should go buy a pie!

Interesting. You haven't fired a pistol in 10 years and you are still alive? :wow: I didn't think that was possible. You must live in a real good neighborhood.
