Hi,

Question, I thought it was implied that the spouse of the beneficiary can go in with their spouse during the interview, then last night I'm reading over the correspondence instructions more carefully and they say that those included on the list on the next sheet can go in, well I'm not on that list, just my wife is. I never worried about it because I thought spouses were automatically allowed to go in.

Also, at every stage up until the interview letter, things from the government have addressed my wife with her assumed married now, now they do it as her old maiden name, why? Is this going to be a problem with anything...on her passport her last name wasn't changed as we were told this wans't necessary, but her Ontario drivers lic and health card and everything else has her married name. Well police certificate and medical list her with maiden name.

So another question is, when she gets her SSN card, is it going to be with maiden name or married name. I plan on asking the interviewer about that. As when we come over, I don't want any issues from NYS DMV, but I imagine I won't have a problem because her ontario license has married name on it...

thanks.

well if the passport has her maiden name the visa will have the maiden name... which means the green card will be in her maiden name too .. I am pretty sure the SSN will be in the maiden name too...

Ah #######, you serious? That sucks. Once shes over and we have everything, can we fill out a form to get her name updated on everything? Especially her green card?

As far as SSN goes, there's a social security administration office right near us, maybe I can make things go more swiftly through them.

if you want to change the name on the green card once she is in the US.. you will have to file form I-90 and pay a fee of $290 dollars...

I could be wrong about this but I am pretty sure that is what you are going to have to do...

back when I went through this I changed my name on my passport before the interview but back then you could just have your new name added as an amendment.. nowadays you need to get a whole new passport...

Wow thats a total crock. I think that's just for a replacement though...I'm not sure though. I guess I'll look at it in more detail later. I seen a couple things online to wait until shes no longer conditional.

$290. If you actually break down the fees of the overhead of paying people data entry ...say 11 an hour, a nickel or less to actually produce the card and for the cost of toner. Say...what. couple bucks to ship, maybe a little more for electricity and blah blah blah I honestly do not know how the government, any government can justify administrative costs.

yeah but if you read further down the page it says

If your biographic data has been legally changed:

Submit a copy of the original court order or a certified copy of your marriage certificate reflecting the new name with your application. To replace a card because of a change of any other biographical data, you must submit copies of documentation to prove that the new data is correct.

So are they implying that if we legally change her name we don't have to pay the $290?..I'm a little confused by the content on their site...

we met a couple that had to get a civil marriage in court to legally change things here, I wonder if we'll have to do that...

I mean the name thing isn't a big problem, its more of an annoyance, but I'm sure after telling so many people, blah blah, thats her maiden name, I'm sure we're going to get sick of saying that and I hate having to repeat myself LOL, so I imagine we'd pay whatever and do what we had to to change things.

if you download the instructions for that form is lists 3 exceptions to have to pay and changing the name isn't one of them unless it was a USCIS error...
