Unemployed? Tough ѕhit

In an unusual display in the normally sleepy chamber, Bunning – without the support of GOP leadership – has blocked efforts to quickly approve a series of extensions to measures that would otherwise expire Sunday, including unemployment insurance and the Cobra program that allows people who lose their health benefits to continue getting coverage.

And that has led to a furious exchange on the floor, with Democrats attacking the senator, who has refused to relent on his objection, in unusually harsh terms.

In a colloquy with Senate Majority Whip ####### Durbin (D-Ill.), Sen. Jeff Merkley, a freshman Democrat from Oregon, was pleading for Bunning to drop his objection, when the Kentucky Republican got fed up.

“Tough s—t,” Bunning said as he was seated in the back row, overheard by the floor staff and others in attendance.

A spokesman for Bunning did not immediately respond to a request for comment.

If you look what companies are having to payout for these benefits..... I agree.

You can't keep going down this path and have people always collecting benefits.

Too many people have become lazy, stingy, and have 'enjoyed' the benefits for too long.

At the same time though, businsses need to be willing to go back to the days of 'on the job training' instead of expecting everyone and their pet hamster to know the job before they even start.

There are plenty of jobs out there.... just people are willing not to work them or companies aren't willing to hire the unexperienced.

First of, what the heck is a 78 year old geriatric doing in office? Nevertheless, I love these republican Senators from nobody states talking big.

PS Scottish whiskey is better than bourbon anyway.

Our Senate is an interesting institution. Kentucky has 1.39% of the total US population. And within Kentucky, Bunning beat his Democratic opponent in the last election (2004) by 2%. Yes, 2%. In other words, his margin of victory was less than 0.3% of the US population. And the rules of our Senate allow this nobody... to hold up UI benefits for the entire nation.

You're right, Boo Yah. Our system is dyfunctional.

Adopt an adequate welfare system, where one is provided with reasonable benefits and held accountable and that should change.

Plenty of Jobs? Doing what?

There a generally two types of businesses in the US, the first being your old 'f-ck em' at all cost businesses; that make up a large portion of the country's workforce. The ones loathed and laughed at abroad, well for those foolish enough to work in them. Or those who don't mind exploiting their fellow Americans for a profit.

Then there is the second generation corporation, which are your Google, Microsoft, Wegmans etc. Companies that actually invest in their employees and community. Companies that realize that in the information age, an employee is no longer just a hired hand that can be replaced at a moments notice. Not only are these companies highly successful, but are the envy of many around the world. This type of organization still does what you are saying and actually relies on it for its innovation and success.

Sorry, our system was designed this way, for this very reason though.

So the New Yorkers and the Los Angeles types can't run over the rest of the nation.

I'm confused. If McConnell is giving his support, which other senators are going along with Bunning to block the vote?

Yes, I agree here. There is no accountability in our system at all. It's part of the overall problem.

Plenty of Jobs? Doing what?

Open the classifieds in any major city. Plenty of jobs.

Please, Americans aren't exploited as many make them out to be. A Wal-Mart employee actually does pretty decently compared to many other 'minimum wage' jobs. Hell, most Wal-Mart employees make a little more than minimum wage even.

You mean horrible companies like Best Buy who pay more than minimum wage and train their employees very well in the electronics world? That offer stock options to their seniors and supervisors for FREE.

You mean horrible companies like Costco where the starting wage at minimum is $10 an hour in most areas.

The only corporation that I know of that actually treats its employees and is unethical in their business practices and isn't some 'stereotype' enhanced by rare cases is Macys... You want to see a company that doesn't take care of their employees at all and has the most expendable ones, it's them.

There's going to be a point ni time wehre companies like this can't afford to do what they're doing and then people will raise hell that they aren't doing enough. It's EASY for a company to do this when they grow at the rate they are and have a stock price as high as google has. These are rare situations now days.

I will tell you this, I honestly don't think you can even fix anything because we have two groups of people with diametrically opposite ideologies on government and how to progress a county. Even as a conservative myself, I just cannot believe the ridiculous beliefs of many with right wing views here. Country First? Who are you trying to fool, it's my pocket and my buddies pocket's first, then military period.

What sort of a senator says basically 'f-ck em' to their own people. Then in the next breath talks about security and his love for the greatest damn country on the earth bla bla bla. It's says in in the bloody preamble of the document repubs swear by 'We the [f-cken] people'. I'd say what I really thought about this geriatric but in this day and age, it would probably end up having me flagged, resulting in requests for details from Ewok.

I totally agree with Cleo and Pike, which as we know is rare, but people need to start actually paying attention to their leaders rather than the song and dance or cliches they say to everyone. Such a statement in Australia would honestly be political suicide, it would be the equivalent of coming out and saying you'hate n----rs' here.

Just read it. Thanks. If it does go through debate, there's no way it will be voted on before Sunday night when people's UI runs out....and Bunning isn't worried about getting re-elected so it's no political skin off his back.
