Age Difference Red Flags?

How tough are they on you when there is an age difference? We have one of about 13 years, but I, the female, is the younger one. I have read when the woman is older it throws up some flags, but for our situation do they often make a big deal?

Not sure if it matters (it probably shouldn't but sometimes it's taken into consideration anyway) I would be coming from Canada, which isn't exactly a high visa fraud country.

I've wondered this question myself; not to mention my fiance in India questioning it also. He is in India and in his 20s and I am American and age 40. I can still bear children and plan to with him.

13 years, younger woman rarely sees problems (so long as everyone's legal :P)

13 years, older woman could be problematic, even in low fraud countries.

I've got closer to 10 years than 9 over L, and we're pretty sure we won't get thrown into AP unless they wig about the age difference, and if they ultimately deny us, I'll just move to Brazil in the fall, become fluent in Portuguese, get a job, and in a few years, we'll DCF. Not our first pick (but a wicked cheaper one), but our families support us either way.

Yea, just call it the Cougar Clause! (Claws?)

It's consulate and cultural specific. 13 years is not a large difference unless you are less than 18 years old.

I am 40. My husband is 26.

We first applied for the K1. At his interview, the CO told him I was too old for him and sent our case back to uscis in Sept 09. I came to Jordan less than a month later and we got married and started the CR1 process. I lived here about 2 months... returned to the US, and I am now visiting again for 3 weeks.

It's crazy ... all this waiting. And I may end up having to move here permanently to be with him. But, we truly love each other, and we want to try to be together in the US first because I have children there.

Only time will tell...........

...MENA, SE Asia, India, where age differences in couples are very unusual, and most people are very traditional, it could be a problem.

I am assuming this is a typo or else a grave lack of information. It is extremely common in SE Asia, Thailand, Cambodia, Laos, Vietnam, etc... for a younger woman to select or prefer an older man. The age difference in couples is VERY USUAL. This is because the woman prefers a man that is responsible, able to care for her (yes, money), and is more settled in their ways (means less likely to go out and find other women).

It is extremely common for a Thai lady to prefer a man much older. I am not saying it is right. I am saying it is USUAL.

Just curious, which are high fraud countries? Wondering if there is a list.

I don't think there's an official list, but it probably encompasses, with relatively few exceptions, the entire world outside of North America and Western Europe. Anywhere that has a GDP that is a small percentage of the US's, or a general standard of living that is substantially below first-world standards is more likely to see significant amounts of visa fraud. This puts the local US consulates on their guard, making them very suspicious and difficult to deal with. Even within this (admittedly broad) group, some US consulates are much more suspicious and guarded than others. Guayaquil, Ecuador is really really bad, I've heard. Nigeria sees a lot of visa fraud too. The Philippines sees a huge amount of visa traffic in general, but I don't know if they see significantly more fraud than you'd expect from their traffic levels.

I may have been unclear. I was speaking specifically of pairings where the woman is significantly older than the man, which I suspect is still quite unusual and nontraditional for the regions I mentioned. I apologize for any confusion.

Si, man. One of the zillion attorneys with whom I spoke had consular experience himself. When I asked him what constituted "high-fraud," he said "Any poor country."
Guayaquil, Ecuador is really really bad, I've heard.
"Really really bad" is an understatement. Even the USC is automatically a convicted criminal.
Nigeria sees a lot of visa fraud too.
Lagos is in a class all its own.

Si, man. One of the only things that my ####### consulate didn't give us hell about was our 15-year age difference (with my being older than she).

06-04-2007 = TSC stamps postal return-receipt for I-129f.

06-11-2007 = NOA1 date (unknown to me).

07-20-2007 = Phoned Immigration Officer; got WAC#; where's NOA1?

09-25-2007 = Touch (first-ever).

09-28-2007 = NOA1, 23 days after their 45-day promise to send it (grrrr).

10-20 & 11-14-2007 = Phoned ImmOffs; "still pending."

12-11-2007 = 180 days; file is "between workstations, may be early Jan."; touches 12/11 & 12/12.

12-18-2007 = Call; file is with Division 9 ofcr. (bckgrnd check); e-prompt to shake it; touch.

12-19-2007 = NOA2 by e-mail & web, dated 12-18-07 (187 days; 201 per VJ); in mail 12/24/07.

01-09-2008 = File from USCIS to NVC, 1-4-08; NVC creates file, 1/15/08; to consulate 1/16/08.

01-23-2008 = Consulate gets file; outdated Packet 4 mailed to fiancee 1/27/08; rec'd 3/3/08.

04-29-2008 = Fiancee's 4-min. consular interview, 8:30 a.m.; much evidence brought but not allowed to be presented (consul: "More proof! Second interview! Bring your fiance!").

05-05-2008 = Infuriating $12 call to non-English-speaking consulate appointment-setter.

05-06-2008 = Better $12 call to English-speaker; "joint" interview date 6/30/08 (my selection).

06-30-2008 = Stokes Interrogations w/Ecuadorian (not USC); "wait 2 weeks; we'll mail her."

07-2008 = Daily calls to DOS: "currently processing"; 8/05 = Phoned consulate, got Section Chief; wrote him.

08-07-08 = E-mail from consulate, promising to issue visa "as soon as we get her passport" (on 8/12, per DHL).

08-27-08 = Phoned consulate (they "couldn't find" our file); visa DHL'd 8/28; in hand 9/1; through POE on 10/9 with NO hassles(!).

The important thing to know is that China is on any such list with Fujian province topping that list internally.

The risk categories are low, medium, high and Lagos.

The good news is that large age differences are common in China culturally but reverse age differences are quite rare. If you've got one, take extra care with the evidence of bona fides and interview preparation.

Everything is relative. Woman 15 years younger is a very small age difference for the PI and pretty much of little concern anywhere. The problems come at 25 years plus when the woman is younger and in some countries as little as 5 years plus when the woman is older. It's cultural and country dependent as already discussed in this thread.
