Hi everyone.

I was reading some job descriptions, and they request security clearances.

Although some specify US Citizenship required and others don't, but is it correct to assume that US Citizenship is required to be able to apply for security clearance or can GC holders obtain them?

thanks....

the HR department at a Company can tell you all about it.

Sometimes my language usage seems confusing - please feel free to 'read it twice', just in case !
Ya know, you can find the answer to your question with the advanced search tool, when using a PC? Ditch the handphone, come back later on a PC, and try again.

All i know is the military allows GC holders in.....most careerfields require a security clearance. Sometimes a "secret" is automatic for a citizen....but i think the GC holders actually get the background check. I know there is background checks even most of the time with citizens. I dont know how much of a background check they do on all of us when we first come in the military...but I know I didnt have my clearance until about a year into the military.

Like stated above, talk to HR at the company you want to apply. they will be able to give you the lowdown on what you need or can do.

Here's some topics on other forums about it:

The last link was of most interest to me, in that it appears dual or multi citizens typically aren't permitted security clearance.

I looks like the general consensus is that in MOST cases citizenship is needed but the best way to know is to ask the employer as it's how HIGH the clearance needs to be... I also think the last link regarding citizenship is where the main issue might lie, in "foreign allegiances".

Security clearances come in 2 forms. There are the ones every one knows about with government classes like Secret, Top Secret and such. GC holders MIGHT be able to get the lowest of these , Confidential, however due to the costs and time most companies won't submit a GC holder for one of those. The higher ones become more problematic if you are even married to a non USC. Besides these there are another set broadly referred to as SBI for special background investigation. These they probe deeply into your past and backgrounds. Because of the lack of investigatability. Unless you hold some extreme talent ( not just a engineering degree but you are a world expect in a field they want ) you can forget about SBI's . In short you are probably NOT going to be considered for any job requiring a government security clearance. There is a similar grouping in the non government sector where the investigations are similar but have a small potential for clearing GC holders.

This will not be over quickly. You will not enjoy this.

Not necessarily. Most US gov. jobs require US Citizenship but not all of them. I'm sure that if you go to the web page and look, they will mention there all the requirements for that position.

US military does not require citizenship for most jobs, some do require a security clearance. Also some research type jobs require security clearances but not citizenship. We do "borrow" tech savvy people from other countries.
