Are these guys for real? I'm the furthest thing from a union guy, but what a low blow. The few people who are willing to work in such areas get the shaft.

CENTRAL FALLS -- A Rhode Island school district has voted to fire all the teachers at an underperforming school.

The Central Falls School Committee voted Tuesday evening to fire every educator at Central Falls High School, including teachers, guidance counselors and the principal.

It's the only school in the tiny, impoverished city north of Providence. Only about half its students graduate, and only 7 percent of 11th-graders were proficient in math in 2009. The plan was developed because of a federal effort to makeover failing schools.

The Central Falls Teachers Union says it is reviewing legal options and hasn't decided what action to take.

Education Secretary Arne Duncan applauds the decision and says "when schools continue to struggle we have a collective obligation to take action."

How do you solve that? Fire everyone that actually gives a sh-t, furthermore, blame them for the drug use.

This strategy would result a straight F in any business school.

Devil is in the detail, thought her name was familiar. State Education Commissioner Deborah A. Gist approved the firing. She was responsible for DC schools, which were ranked some of the worst performing in the country.

Too bad they can't fire the parents, who IMO, have more influence on a child's ability to learn (barring any learning disabilities), than a teacher does. What a travesty.

My comment wasn't meant to imply this. I should have posted more than one sentence. Central Falls is like a mini-Detroit. The school is the least of their problems. Rhode Island has some run down areas and this is one of them. What kind of school committee takes this action? It says a lot about the ruling bodies and the attitude of city officials.

Yeah. I'd be interested to know what steps were taken previously. Accreditation? Standards research? Standardized testing? How do they monitor the students? What is the average grades of the kids? Etc?

That just makes it even worse. What sort of morons fire the folks that actually give a ####### and are willing to work in such areas?

This denial of reality sh-ts me up the wall in this place. There are only two people accountable for one's education: 1. The student 2. The parent. Without cooperation from the first and support from the second, the task of trying to educate a child increases 100 fold. As such, firing the staff does nothing to change the attitude and mindset of the first and second.

You'd think them having 5 principals leave in x years means something. I know in Victoria, AUS teachers who work in dodgy areas receive state and federal grants ranging from $5K to $10k. On top of that they are now eligible for up to $10K in extra pay for improvement. Sounds logical to me. How do we motivate teachers here? Fire the few that are actually willing to work in such areas.
