Senate Majority Leader Harry Reid (D-Nev.) suggested Monday that domestic violence by men has increased due to U.S. joblessness.

Reid, speaking in the midst of a Senate debate over whether to pass a $15 billion package meant to spur job creation, appeared to argue that joblessness would lead to more domestic violence.

Reid said that the effects of joblessness on domestic violence were especially pronounced among men, because, Reid said, women tend to be less abusive.

"Women don't have jobs either, but women aren’t abusive, most of the time," he said.

I can believe it.

Don't just open your mouth and prove yourself a fool....put it in writing.

It gets harder the more you know. Because the more you find out, the uglier everything seems.

start the clock now - waiting for his apology for stereotyping. :clock:

Actually, it sounds like he's done a bit of reading on the subject and perhaps knows a bit about it than just being anecdotal.

...from the census and the Uniform Crime Reports for central cities in 1970 and 1990, we examine the direct and indirect relationship between the industrial structure of central cities and the rates of homicide. The findings reveal that a decline in the access to low-skill jobs increases violence indirectly by first increasing economic deprivation. .... The analysis supports a macro-social link between violence and urban industrial restructuring in central cities.

"Women don't have jobs either, but women aren’t abusive, most of the time," he said.

studies have repeatedly shown that in the majority of cases in which a man is charged with "abuse" the woman in the relationship hit him first. this is why most states have "arrest them both" laws since the late 90's.

It's not wrong to suppose that unemployment and financial stresses cause social tensions. Of course we'd rather focus on how the politician chose his words, rather than on the argument presented.

That is pretty typical of the US, at least if VJ (and the media) provides any indications as to the public consciousness.

Well the good news for us VJers that most of us didn't marry domestic spouses (or vice versa), so domestic violence must be pretty rare for us.
