k, i'm confused. i've heard of magicjack but when i looked at their site they gave international rates? ah am i being stupid? yes i think i am... if i send the magicjack to adel in algeria, i'm calling the number for that magicjack, which will be an american number and not cost me much of anything? is that how it works?

Yes you can send it to her and not have to pay to call that number, the catch is that it needs to be set up in America BEFORE you send it to her. I currently have my majicjack that I bought in the US and I can call and recieve calls from teh US for free (I do have to pay the yearly subscription fee) Just set it up before you send it and use it a time or two to make sure it is working properly, then you are good to go as long as she has a good internet connection where she lives. I use the Magic Jack here in the US but I don't think it's necessary to send her one in VN because if her laptop is on, I would just rather see her on Yahoo video chat instead!

Its for calls the other way IMO.. when she needs to call me and I'm not home.. she can call my cell anywhere in the US or a family member of mine free... I am sending one to Thuys sister and one to her mother so we will be able to call them whenever and vice versa...

And a netbook can be had for 200 now.. I just got one for her son yesterday...

I think you do need a computer to use Magic Jack..

To use a magicJack, you MUST have the following:

1. A computer with an available USB port; AND

2. Any computer with Windows XP, Windows Vista, Windows 7 or Intel-based Apple MAC operating system; AND

3. One of the following: Broadband, High-Speed Internet, Cable Internet, DSL, WiFi, Wireless, or WiMax; AND

4. Your present corded telephone or cordless telephone system (you can also use a headset or your computer's microphone and speakers)

You don't use the device at all once you figure out the SIP info. This was discussed in some of the last Feb 23 posts by myself and one other poster. You need an ATA (analog telephone adapter), your account into, and a bit of research.

I think you do need a computer to use Magic Jack..

You don't. Have a look at the last few posts on Feb 23 between myself and another poster.

OIC now.. the same way vonage works... so one just gets the settings from the majicjack and sets the ATA accordingly

The problem is I don't think those methods of getting the MagicJack SIP credentials work anymore according to those blogs.

Do a search for "Magic Jack SIP info". I'm sure you'll find a solution somewhere.

we get terrible reception with the magicjack. the computer it's connected to uses DSL and is well above the minimum KBPS requirement. I can't hear him at all and there is tons of noise and horrible snapping sounds. I've contacted magicjack support and they basically shrugged their shoulders. :(

Have you tested your DSL upstream and downstream bandwidth?

it's not me that has it, it's over in algeria and i highly doubt he's done that; he tried it on someone else's computer and it worked fine so it's something to do with his pc or his connection i guess but i dunno what or how to fix it

and he's not very computer savvy so it's kinda hard to figure it out by phone or chat... i thought about maybe getting him setup on my logmein and going in and looking around to see if i could find a problem
