I was wondering if this sort of thing was possible with MJ. Very cool. However, I noticed the last comment on the page you linked to:

None of the previous hacks are working anymore since the last mj update the password has been hidden and no one has figured out where to show us how to retreave it.

Hopefully that is just a confused user. If not, then it sounds like anyone who wants to do this will want to use an older version of the mj software to uncover the required info.

That's good to know. I'm puzzled as to why MJ would try to hide this from subscribers.

I used skype unlimited to canada AND US $3/month, if you pay 1 year subcription it cost you around $30. good signal and have call reports too

link http://www.skype.com/allfeatures/subscriptions/uscanada/

Skype is a good option, especially if you don't need to receive incoming calls from regular telephones. If you need to receive incoming calls, then you'd have to purchase a phone number from Skype. This adds another $30 per year to the subscription cost ($60 per year, if you don't buy a Skype subscription). Most people in VN wouldn't need to buy the phone number because, as I described before, they wouldn't be replacing their mobile phone with the service. They would just be using it as an inexpensive way to call the US.

There is a slight delay in any sort of VoIP application. Whatever you say has to be digitized and compressed, transmitted over the internet, and decompressed for playback at the receiving end. In most cases, the delay isn't any worse than what you'd get with pretty much any international phone call. It gets worse if you're also using webcam at the same time. It's not usually a problem with Skype unless you're using your computer's speakers and mic, or a webcam mic. What happens is that some of the sound from the speakers is picked up by the mic. Because of the slight delay, it can produce a very annoying echo effect. This doesn't usually happen with MagicJack because you're using a conventional telephone handset, so the mic doesn't pick up any sound from the speaker. If you want to use Skype, I recommend either wearing headphones to isolate the incoming and outgoing audio, or get a headset that includes a microphone.

I'll be brining an Ooma device over to Vietnam to give to my fiancee's parents. That way they don't have to keep a computer powered on 24/7 and it only uses 5 watts of energy.

Here is something I posted on Amazon's website (for someone that said Ooma was too expensive in comparison to Magic Jack. since i was going back and forth between the two, i wanted to get the real numbers):

The rates in Vietnam are cheaper than in MI, so here are the yearly energy costs for Vietnam:

$65.70 MagicJack (regular computer)

$8.76 MagicJack (netbook)

$2.19 Ooma

5 year cost comparison (Vietnam)

$448.50 Magic Jack (regular computer)

$463.80 Magic Jack (netbook)

$367..20 Ooma

10 year cost comparison (Vietnam)

$877 Magic Jack (regular computer)

$607.60 Magic Jack (netbook)

$359.90 Ooma

I am doing cost comparison between US and VN. I am thinking about getting one for my mother-in-law.

What about the costs in VN??? $300,000 = $20 each month for ADSL fee? = $240 a year not including turn on the electricity for the PC, Monitor, and Modem?

We are using 24/7 calling cards cost us around $50 a month = $600 a year without any ADSL connection or eletric fees. (My MIL has her cellular phone). We can call her anywhere in VN.

Using MJ will only cost us $40 for the first year, and costing $240 for ADSL in VN + electrical fee, and more.

What do you all think?

Thank you.

Read the last several posts in this thread - you likely don't need to keep your computer/monitor on in order to use MJ. Just follow the instructions posted in the last link and buy yourself an ATA (Analog Telephone Adapter). An ATA will definitely use less power than a PC & monitor.

Majic Jack has voice mail features that if someone calls it will let you know even if your computer is off and the majic jack is unpluged, I am using it with no problems in Vietnam right now. Everyonce in a wile i loose a bit of clarity, just like skype or yahoo messenger, but for the most part it works perfectly, I would not use anything else, I leave it unplugged most of the time just because I know I have the voice mial features, and if it is that important they will leave a message, then I can plug it all in and call them back when i check my emails. some people never know why their VOIP quality is bad.

most company have codecs available : ALAW/ULAW, G729, GSM...

they use ULAW by default for better quality and low CPU usage.

DSL in Vietnam said 1.5Mbps but test about 124kbps upstream by dslreports.com

So people in Vietnam get delay when use ULAW codec.

if using ATA adapter or software like Xten they can change codec to GSM(6Kbps) could work flawlessly.

The MagicJack telephone number will be based in the US. The MagicJack unit can be connected to the internet anywhere in the world, but the user will have a US phone number. They can call anywhere in the US or Canada for no additional charge. Anyone calling their MagicJack phone number would pay whatever they would normally pay to call a number in that area code. You have the option of selecting the area code when you register the MagicJack the first time, so it's advisable to choose an area code that is local for most of the people who would be calling you.

The international rates only come into effect if you use the MagicJack to call a number outside the US or Canada.
