Is the air problem due to pollution or climate? - The water problem I completely understand - driving without losing hair though? That's a weird one

Electricity on demand, not scheduled, I think?

The air problem is all about pollution. I blew black out of my nose for 2 weeks straight. I've been back since Sunday and it's already mostly cleared up. I can finally breathe again. It's nice.

Driving in an Indian city is an exercise in defying mortality. Driving along these quiet suburban roads here... is awesome.

So much to say about pollution, but...

They could do so much about their pollution if they simply adopted US-style auto emissions standards and required all cars to have yearly inspections just like here.

As in they don't routinely decide to shed my electricity as a load reducing measure. I reasonably expect to always have electricity, except when there's a problem like weather or other accident.

Ah ok. California has experienced rolling blackouts, but I've only experienced being in a couple of them.

I have never, not here. That alone is a good reason to never live in Cali.

That kind of ####### is what I associate with the 3rd world.

Oh, I agree. California's problem came from the whole Enron debacle, but you'll hear a different spin on it from others.

Enron was a part of it. Just a part.

Delhi's IGI airport is interesting. I transited there both ways so my experience is very recent. They've done a very good job of providing all the niceties that airports in the US don't even provide, like good food all hours of the day and night and lots of places to check your email and laptop kiosks, etc. Even places where you can charge your own cell phone even if you don't have a charger. Makes long layovers less unpleasant, that's for sure. But where they fail - miserably - is signage. Knowing where you need to go next is a matter of guesswork and/or asking people.

Well that was my point since day one. Various international airports have lots to do while waiting both outside and within the restricted area. You have quite a few places to eat at or grab a coffee, you have stores to browse at, and even areas for any family members or business travelers to relax at, while waiting for a flight, or their connecting flight.

Airports like LAX international here on the other hand are stuck in the 80's, literally for LAX, as that was its last upgrade. That is, when it was initially constructed. Dulles in DC is the same, impersonal and industrialized, with f'all to do while waiting.

Who did you fly with?

Air India service from JFK to Kolkata. I wanted to avoid long layovers anywhere and also wanted to avoid customs/immigration at Delhi or Mumbai.

Otherwise you could have caught Emirates, which flies from JFK, and they are awesome.

Or a US airline, but they would probably charge you for a seat which reclines. The latest charge is for a pillow and blanket.

It's good to be back. Life here is civilized. What I wrote above is just one aspect of my stay there :) There's a lot more.

Why not start a thread about your travel experiences? I'd be most interested in learning more about life in India.

Emirates would have meant a long layover at Dubai. I wanted to avoid that too.

I'm serious, I'd really enjoy hearing your experiences and opinions on what you saw. Give it a shot.

I'm not much of a writer and I seriously lack patience

Do it like a blog? You can post some short experiences, do some compare and contrast to the US etc. We can police it ourselves to keep it on track, like we did in the America Appreciation thread.
