Hello,

I am brand new to this board. My husband and I will be travelling abroad for the first time this June. We will travelling from Dallas to Barcelona with a connecting flight in Amsterdam. Can anyone give me any pointers on how to get through customs/immigrations as quickly and painlessly as possible? How does the process work? In Dallas, will we go through Spain or Netherlands customs? Also we have a return flight at 6:30 a.m. from Barcelona. Is anyone familar with the airport there and can tell us what to expect? Neither of us speak Spanish. Will we have any trouble getting around at the airport? Any comments/advise will be most appreciated!

You will go through customs when you enter a country. Transiting in Amsterdam you will not go through customs unless you leave the airport.

When you get to Barcelona you will go through customs there.

When you return to Dallas, you will go through US customs.

That is actually incorrect regarding the European portion of the trip.

Entering the Schengen Zone you will go through customs (but not claim your bags like in the us) in Amsterdam, in Barcelona you will already be within the Schengen Zone so you will just walk off the plane without any checks and you can go straight to collect you luggage.

Same thing on your return portion, the Barcelona to Amsterdam flight is considered 'domestic' and no checks will be made, the airline will make sure that you have a passport though if you are being checked all the way through to Dallas. And customs will once again take place in Amsterdam where you are intending to leave Schengen on a USA bound flight.
