Each consulate is different.

Bangkok won't let me in on the interview day. I'd have to wait outside. So me going to Thailand for the interview when he's not coming to the US until after the wedding in September is a waste. It won't increase his chances of approval or denial whether I'm there or not. The best thing I can do is prepare the relationship evidence and drill him on possible questions.

Dominican Republic sounds like it's very different from Bangkok. If Estrella says it's a VERY good idea for the petitioner to be there, then, by golly, the petitioner needs to be there. It certainly can't hurt anything.

Good luck, everyone!

Tharnsur,

From what our Thai friends have told us and experiences I've read on the "Thai version of VJ" it's very difficult for the USC to be allowed in. It usually takes a fair amount of scheming. The beneficiary going in at 7 am (the time everyone gets let in, regardless of actual appointment time) and the petitioner going for breakfast and a stroll before going in around 8 to "visit with the American Citizen Services section." Once the petitioner gets there, the waiting rooms are right next to each other, so the petitioner can go and sit next to their spouse. If one of the officers sees this, though, they're likely to tell the petitioner to wait outside. From there, it's up to the petitioner if they want to make a hassle out of it or not. Technically, it's the US Embassy and they're a US citizen; they're allowed to stay.

But... it's VERY poor manners to have a confrontation in public in Thailand and with someone perceived to be in a position of power, such as a consulate officer, it just looks even worse to argue with them. He's a lawyer. His brother is a lawyer. His mom is a teacher. His dad is a high ranking police officer. In other words, he and his family are generally well-respected by the community. I understand just how important appearances are, and I'm not going to put my husband in a situation where he, and his family by extension, could be viewed poorly because his white wife is "breaking the rules" or "causing a scene."

I wish it was different!! Oh, how I wish it was 2005 and they let me in! So, so jealous of you, Tharnsur!

Now, Tharnsur, please correct me if I'm mistaken and I don't mean any disrespect, but you're Khmer, right? I've known of women whose spouses are Thais or Chinese who have gained US citizenship being allowed to bring their spouse in. It may be that times were different in 2005, or it may be that you were allowed in by virtue of you not being Farang. For Farang, though, I've heard it's much better to wait outside. Even Farang like me who are well versed in Thai history, culture, and language.

It's alright. He's going to be fine. He says if he can handle being in court, then he can handle being in front of the consular officer. EiEi. The boy's nuts, but I love him.

Kari - i am khmer. I emigrated to the US in the 80s. I don't remember the history of why there's no us embassy in Cambodia in the early 1990s all i remembered is we were told to go to the US embassy in Thailand.

WOW i can edit my post!!!!

Whew! Work has finally come to a screeching halt for spring break and so I can now focus on my AOS package. I'm going in to have the 2009 taxes done in the next day or two. I have 6 months of pay stubs, W2's for 2009, 2008, and 2007, all of which more than meet the income requirements but I've seen a lot of RFE's for work letters lately and since I'm a teacher, I figure I'd best put that in the package since we work on year to year contracts. That being said, is there specific information NVC wants to see in there? I just want to know so that when I ask my boss he can put into the letter whatever needs to be there as we won't get our contracts until the end of April/ beginning of May so I won't be able to just send that in. Also, since I'm filing the 2009 taxes this week, is there a wait time needed or if they see that I had my taxes prepared by a professional will that do?

Thanks everyone and I hope you all get the good news you're waiting for...and soon!
