For Spring Break, I'm taking two of my friends to LA. They're Thai. They've been here for almost 3 years and haven't been out of the state. So off to LA we'll go. Or so we thought. Yesterday, the younger one calls to tell me her mother lost their green cards. All 3 of them -- her, her mother, and her sister who's coming, too. WHAT?! How in the heck do you lose your green cards. I mean... it's an effin' GREEN CARD! Conditions were just recently removed and it's gonna be a very expensive ($300 per card!) hoop to jump through to get a replacement. Not to mention that there's a CBP checkpoint on our way to LA. #######!!

No panicing allowed. So I ask her, "Where's your social security card? You have to be legal to get one, so we'll take that and your passport (showing an expired CR-2 visa) as a starting point for CBP if they hassle us."

You know what she says?

"My mom lost our social secuirty cards, too. She went to do her taxes, and now they're missing."

ARGH!!!

So tonight we're praying and waiting for her school to issue a verification of enrollment letter showing her current address, date of birth, and social security number. I figure it's a start. If that and the passport (and a letter of parental consent for me to take the youngin's out of state for a week) don't work, then we'll just find somewhere to travel within the state.

No worries. I just needed to release before I went all on two teenagers and their mother who are like little sisters and another mother to me.

Why do you need to go through CBP to go from one state to another? Am I missing something in your story?

At the Texas-New Mexico border, there's a station outside of El Paso. I remember going through it on a trip with my dad years ago. (We're a family that loves roadtrips. What can I say?) We had a tiny grumble from them because my dad wasn't a custodial parent, yet he had my brother and I and was taking us out of the state. It's not in their scope to deal with child custody, but that's another story. CBP is relevent here because if you want to go through El Paso, and I do, then you're going to pass through the CBP station as well.

Vivek, did I miss your story about how you and your wife met? I saw Sachi ask and then I don't remember seeing an answer. Will you share your story with us?

Wow thats quite a road trip. Didn't know about this border crossing for interstate.

I haven't posted my story yet but will certainly post it.

Damn, folks. My broadband was down for 12 hours, driving me insane.

Firstly, I'm so so sorry about your RFE, Estrella. I hope you're able to get it out soon.

Tharnsur--So we're not quite sure if it's an RFE or not, yet?

Same with SJ?

I can still sign in. Grrr. My AVR has not been updated since February 24. It still says they mailed out the RFE which worries me. However, our AOS package too was never inputted and we got the RFE straight up. I was told by the operator it was in the system the day before the RFE. Another operator told my husband that they had infact received our RFE and it was being processed since Friday. I don't know what is taking them so long! Add the amounts and see that it corresponds to the assets listed on the form! That's it and then complete our case for the love of God!

GAH. I was hoping to log into VJ and see wonderful news. But I guess it was not to be. I'm keeping my fingers crossed for all of you. I think we can all relax a bit now, doesn't matter if we get our SIF today or tomorrow. We're not making this round of scheduling. Breaks my heart, it does. But what are we gonna do about it?

Let's hope Thursday brings us some comfort.
