First of all, thanks for reading.

So, we are preparing all the documents for our interview in Naples. We have a question. Since me (the beneficiary) will take a MBA in the US and hence take out loans, will that be a problem when it comes to showing how much money we have to sponsor me (through my wife's US bank account)? Please note I won't have any loan yet at the time of interview.

thanks!

Hey, me again! As far as I understand, your need for loans in the future have nothing to do with your I-864 now. When you fill out the form, include your wifes assets (bank account) and current salary (if applicable), then make sure that it's 5x the 125%poverty line requirements if your ONLY using assets (Naples requires 5x when using assets, other consulates only require 3x). If you don't reach the 5x 125%poverty line, then you will need a co-sponser.

Hope that helps!

Ok good to know! Yeah, we will either do so or ask her grandmother to help us with that. She is retired but she has lots of assets which helps. Also, they just require a bank statement from my wife's side right? Like how much money she has on her bank account at the time of the interview and nothing else right?

thanks a lot!

One more thing. Can I use my own assets as well, like the money in my bank account? The instructions of the form seems to say so, what do you think?

Also, would my father in law qualify to sponsor us? he is a US citizen but he has resided for many years in Japan now. Still, I believe he files taxes in the US? Could his assets/income count?

In November when we went through Naples, they were concerned that the US sponsor either met the 125% poverty level OR (as in our case) we had to show a bank account containing $56,000 (3x 125%) in the US citizens bank account in the USC name... When we showed that, no other questions and the visa was issued...

Rob, Christeen is right, you just show the bank statement (or a letter from your wife's bank in the US) showing her balance and name on the account. If you are going to use a co-sponser, from what I understand, they must currently reside in the US...so I don't think you can use your father-in-law. However, your wifes grandmother could be a possible sponser (should you need it).

That's correct, the co-sponsor must be domiciled in the U.S.
