Moving my pets to America

Hi there.. I plan on moving to the US before 2011 and I'm curious as to how I go about moving my pets with me. I own a Nanday conure which is a small South American Parrot. I also have a 5 year old female Tortoise shell cat. I plan on living in Reno, Nevada USA with my fiance and I currently live in Brantford, Ontario Canada. We've learned it's a good 4 day travel-by-car trip so I'm wondering if there are any specific procedures on transporting such animals across the border permanently. Also, we will be doing so using our K1 visa. So, is there anything I need to know regarding this matter including whether or not there might be a specific service available to accommodate such a situation. Help with this would be much appreciated. Thanks again!

Hi,

Yes you can move with pets but you need a Cites permit from Canada and also a permit from the US if either parrot is on the endangered species list. http://www.cites.ca/ In this case you will have to apply for an import permit from the US fish and wildlife service. You will also have to get a Veterinarians health

letter. Hopefully you have the purchase details as well.

I have 2 parrots as well going through the immigration process. There are pet passports and exports. they will want to know how you plan on taking them as well. My amazon is on the endangered species list so its a bit more complicated as you need 2 authorizations ,if you need more info

email me.

I'm moving to the US on May 31st with my labrador Honey so yes it can be done. But to be honest, start with your research now, it has taken us nearly a year to get everything finalised. Google 'pet shipping companies in your area' and see what you come up with. I did that and then put out loads of enquiries and got quotations back. Be warned though, it is very expensive. Its costing about $3,000 (plus vets bills) to transport our Honey. But it will be worth every penny to us (shes our baby!).

Then, we found an excellent vet who specialised in pet passports and we've gone ahead and applied for that (which included microchipping, rabies vaccination & blood titre test). I do believe though that you only need minimal documents to enter the USA - health certificate, microchip & rabies vaccine (we've actually gone the whole hog in case we are ever to return to the UK, who are much stricter about animal transportation). Hope that helps...

Good luck :star:
