Considering that Americans are now living on the streets due to this economy, what a bloody disgrace.

This is a prime example of adequate laws desperately needed to fine a company and its managers (personally) into bankruptcy.

I actually thought you had good news (inside info) considering this economy, until I kept on reading..

"What happened at Gebbers — it fries my brain sometimes," says Brody, adding that he shouldn't have to verify whether a worker's status is legitimate.

maybe it's a mindset like that on the part of employers as to why we have a problem in the first place.

Perhaps a $10K on the spot fine for the manager will help motivate them to check status. This response is exactly why we need massive fines that make an impact. Actually, this is such a huge abuse of the system that the plant should be shut down.

It's the equivalent of someone working in childcare saying why should they be required to screen the background of anyone they hire to work with kids.

This is a similar dilemma that produce farmers in the UK face. Areas that are trying to cope with mass unemployment figures and it's because no Brit or EU citizen is willing to do the work for the rate of pay. We have a minimum wage here, and it is enforced but we apparently would rather stay on benefits than lift a finger because the return isn't good enough for the level of labour input required.

They've resorted to shipping labourers in from Poland, who are legally allowed to work here because they're part of the EU and are willing to live in shared accommodation so they can maximise the amount of money they get to send home.

And the UK Border Agency do apply fines to employers found with unauthorised workers. It's usually in the region of £5-10K ($7.5 - 15K) PER employee.

Timeline Summary:

K-1/K-2 NOA1 - POE: 9 February - 9 July 2010

Married: 17 July 2010

AOS mailed - Interview : 22 November 2010 - 10 March 2011

ROC mailed - approved: 14 February - 18 June 2013

Citizenship mailed - ceremony: 9 February - 7 June 2017

The program called E-Verify (courtesy of our friends at USCIS) would resolve this problem immediately.

It should be a requirement of employers or face the fines you suggested.

In the sweet old country where I come from

Nobody ever works

Yeah nothing gets done

We hang fire, we hang fire

You know marrying money is a full time job

I don't need the aggravation

I'm a lazy slob

I hang fire, I hang fire

Hang fire, put it on the wire

We've got nothing to eat

We got nowhere to work

Nothing to drink

We just lost our shirts

I'm on the dole

We ain't for hire

Say what the hell

Say what the hell, hang fire

Hang fire, hang fire, put it on the wire

Doo doo doo

here's ten thousand dollars go have some fun

Put it all on at a hundred to one

Hang fire, hang fire, put it on the wire
