You just take you GC with your married name and ask them to issue you SSN with married last name. If your other IDs have your maiden name, have your marriage certificate as proof of last name change. Then once you have SSN issued in your married name, go to DMV. DMV issues DL depending on last name associated with SSN. So even if later you decide you want to change your last name back to maiden, you would have to change your last name at SSN first, and then DMV.

Oh so i won't be able to get a DL before i get a SSN? That stinks i feel deprived not being able to drive anywhere :(

I don't think this is the case, ok first of all you don't need to even have a SSN to get a DL (in new york that is), you just need to prove (with documents) that you can't have a SSN right now, and if you have the other 6 requirements then it should be fine!

Yes, you need SSN first and only then you can get a DL. Wait for your green card, go to SSN office, get the SSN number and then go to DMV :)

From UTAH DMV:

IMPORTANT INFORMATION:

Effective January 1, 2010, ALL applicants for a Utah driver license (original, renewal or duplicate) or Identification card will need to visit one of our licensing offices and provide:

* Proof of identity by showing evidence of original or copies certified by the issuing agency;

* Legal/lawful presence;

* Social Security Number or ITIN;

* Two proofs of Utah residence address, if it is different than the address on your current Utah record; and

* Evidence of name change, if applicable

I don't think this is the case, ok first of all you don't need to even have a SSN to get a DL (in new york that is), you just need to prove (with documents) that you can't have a SSN right now, and if you have the other 6 requirements then it should be fine!

Please don't give wrong advices if you don't know the answer for sure! :bonk:

1. She lives in UTAH, so she does need SSN to get driving license.

2. Proof that she can't get SSN right now?? HELLO! She just got approved for green card! :blink:

aah yea sorry, actually you do need that, I just remember when I first arrived here in USA, I remember when we proof that we couldn't get a SSN, the social security administration office was giving a paper that we can't get a SSN , with that paper DMV was issuing a DL surely only if you have the other 6 point requirements. I never actually did this, because I got my SSN the second week I was here but I remember my friends did this loong time ago, but again yes things change fast, sorry for the wrong info.

Even if she had ITIN, as soon as she would get her SSN she would have to contact IRS (if she used ITIN for tax returns) and DMV to change ITIN to SSN once it is issued.

SSN is really quick to issue. What you can do now is to study for your driving exam by the time your green card arrives and you receive your SSN you will be ready for your exam. Or when you go to SSA and they issue SSN, ask them if they could tell you the number, because you need to use it. You never know, you might get lucky and not have to wait for your SSN card to know the number :)

No i don't have an ITIN we were waiting for a SSN to do a revised tax return because it is easier. I guess i will just have to patiently wait for my GC :(. When i apply for a SSN i will definitely ask them for the number!!

I got 2 letters from DHS today, 1 giving me my Welcome to America I-485 approval letter. The 2nd one was for approval of my I-130 although the USCIS website still says it is in initial review. I thought one of them was my EAD. I wonder if they cancelled it because i got approved for a Green Card?!

Damn really? What's the new green card??

I'm wondering if mine is delayed because they waited until yesterday to bother processing it. That would suck. :(

Edit; Yep, just checked online right now and for the first time it says card production was ordered on May 11th. *sigh*
