That is very strange. I had affidavits that i sent in with my petition but my IO didn't even really say anything about it. It sounds like the only choice you have is to get the letters. If not then i don't know what i would do. It seems kind of silly some people just are not close with there parents and for him to base approval on her writing an affidavit seems stupid. Did you have affidavits from your parents? If not then that was just unfair. What exactly does the letter say? Like what exactly is he asking her mother/grandmother to write.

>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>

It has 2 boxes checked.

1. asking for 3 statements from friends or family confirming our relationship and they has to be notarized.

2. affidavits from my wife mom and grandmother and they must be notarized.

I am still unclear if how much he wants because he said we only need those 2 but we are going to send in 3. I was fine all day and I considered our interview a success but thinkin about it now really makes me upset and my wife looks like she is down. I just dont understand how our interview turned into what type of relationship you have with you mother. He was askin her questions about her own mother. lol. It was just bizzare. So if she didnt know her moms age (which she didnt kno the exact age) does that mean we dont have a real relationship. lol its crazy.

It is crazy i would be extremely annoyed. I read your other post it sounds like you guys got people to fill them out so everything should be fine. The fact that it was not required to begin with and he is making a huge deal about it is silly. Good luck sorry you got someone who is apparently not the friendliest! I was going to add that you said he was almost tricking you into admitting a lie my IO did that too with asking me really quick questions to see if i would slip up.

Ok i am going to try and look for it there. I was just wondering because they didn't say where they were putting it and why. Thanks!!

It was moved by the great Captain Ewok :)

Ewok created a new sub-forum in the AOS from Work etc forum so you guys had a specific place to post your "yay I've been approved" and other updates things without it clogging the question area (like we do over in the AOS from Family area)

If you have a look up the top of the thread, just above where it says "view new content" etc (on the right) you'll see a thread path that leads like this:

VisaJourney.com > Immigration Discussion for US Visa Holders and Permanent Residents > Adjustment of Status from Work, Student, & Tourist Visas > Adjustment of Status Case Filing and Progress Reports > February 2010 filers??

Normally we'd have written a "from and to" and a reason but because it was a quick move and the links for "moved" were there he didn't bother.

Luckygoat, that sucks about the IO at your interview! But I'm sure once you send in the affidavits everything will be okay. Maybe he was just a newer officer so he was being really strict??

I went to the SS office to apply for a SSN with my EAD and the guy at the office (after us waiting for ages!!) said there was no point in him processing it. He said the SS card would say on it that I am not a resident and it's only a temp SSN. I showed him my approval letter for the GC and he said that he would need me to physically HAVE the GC with me in order to process a proper SSN. So he said there was no point giving me a temporary card, that would take 2-3 weeks to mail out anyway, when I would just have to come back in 2-3 weeks when I receive the GC.

So basically, I still don't have one until I get the residency card. Sigh. I've had a couple of job interviews, and I did tell them up front that I'm still waiting on all this stuff, but... you know businesses. They assume you can just GET it when they need you to. The bank even said "Yes but if we hire you, then you can give it to us when you start work." Um... no?? I can give it to you when I get it, which probably won't be for another month.

I have read about a couple of people calling after a couple of days to get the number so they can give it to banks etc. Maybe that will help with your work problem? Don't they (the SSA) tell you not the carry the card anyway so your work might not ask to see it.

I bet your GC will be here by monday at latest. I just haven't seen any timelines that people have waited more than 10 days for it. I am sure you will get it. I am trying patiently to wait for it but i just can't help but want it lol. So i guess the EAD is pretty useless now but it will still be nice to have something!

Question:

Do i have to go in and legally change my name? My GC has my married name on it so does that mean i can get a license and SS card with my married name, or do i have to stand in line at SS office to change my name?

I'm just taking my GC when I get it (with my married name), my birth cert and my marriage licence with me, and asking them to issue the SS card in my married name. Presumably that's all we have to do?? I'm not sure.

USCIS are really unhelpful with this kind of thing, I find. They should really send a letter explaining the next steps of the process or something.

That is very true! I called there 1-800 number a couple of times and they were pretty useless and i found that you got different answers all the time. You should recommend that they send a letter with our GC's lol. Yeah i was just kind of wondering about getting a license whether they will issue me it in my married name even though i don't have my name legally changed.

You just take you GC with your married name and ask them to issue you SSN with married last name. If your other IDs have your maiden name, have your marriage certificate as proof of last name change. Then once you have SSN issued in your married name, go to DMV. DMV issues DL depending on last name associated with SSN. So even if later you decide you want to change your last name back to maiden, you would have to change your last name at SSN first, and then DMV.
